Extras vs size of engine
Would like some comments here:
Thinking about cutting down some of the extras for the twin turbo 535D instead of the 530D engine. I think i will enjoy the more powerfull engine more than some of the extras. What are you saying? Off course both will be with aut gear, and the more basic extras, but what about all the others. Active cruise, Lane Change warning, HUD vs a more powerfull engine? |

For me active cruise is not an essential, lane change might be nice but not at the expense of a more powerful engine. If you enjoy driving then the power of the engine is right up there with the most important decisions. Essential options for me are Prof sat nav Visibility pack Comfort heated seats HUD (I've had this on my E60 M5 for years and now could not live without it) Sports auto M sport package I've ordered other options as well but those above would be the essentials

HUD is a must, no doubt about it.
Active Cruise is real nice, it definitely has safety benefits. You will not plough into the back of a truck when cruising and paying a little less attention. Lane change warning is nice on the AutoBahn as an extra layer of safety for fast approaching traffic. But you can do without it I guess. But in my opinion, the joy of the 35d engine is priceless.

Sure, but you can always get distracted, if only for a second.
Like at night when you're fiddling with the radio or the climate control. The ACC / anti-collision warning might come in handy when at that very moment a slow car is changing lanes without signal.

For me the engine and the handling is most important. Adding gadgates to the car makes it handle worse, take more fuel and cost more.
Navigation for lots of money seems like the worst gadget in my book, for 1/10 of the price you get a better portable unit in some cases. A proper stereo with USB, good seats, xenon lights is what I consider most important. Ie, I would rather drive a standard 530D than a 520D with M-sport etc etc. |

For me the HUD,Lane Change, Blind Spot, and active cruise can all be dumped, had them on the M6, turned them off.

Just to be different- coming from E61 535D M sport, went for F11 520D with Ģ11k options rather than 530D with Ģ2k options and don't regret it for a second. Sufficient power for my requirements in the family bus and loving virtually all of the luxury/convenience options I specced. If it was my only car then maybe adifferent choice however!

I have an F10 530d and, after my E60 530d, the engine provides more than sufficient power. I don't know how or when I would use the extra power of the 535d, but of course, if you can afford the extra power, why not? I bought my car off the floor with some very nice extras which I would not want to do without. Here in South Africa the 535d is FAR more expensive than both the 530d and the 535i. Some of you may find the figures interesting (bearing in mind that the South African Rand is (today) trading at R6.90 to the US dollar:
523i: R484 728 520d: R486 453 528i: R574 228 530d: R633 420 535i: R652 412 535d: R737 591 550i: R845 516. While the prices are high, the standard specification is quite good. For example, 530d and up come standard with the Sports Auto, but not adaptive drive. I don't think that the difference in price, at least in South Africa, would be worth it for an extra 40kw and 60nm. One would possibly also have to bear in mind the manner in which a diesel develops its power. I think one would be hard-pressed to tell the difference between 540nm and 600nm of torque. And I hardly ever have the opportunity or a long enough stretch of road to rev my car to 4000 rpm, the point at which maximum power is developed. While the 535d has two turbos, I don't think that the 530d can be accused of lethargy. In fact, Fifth Gear expressed the view that the 530d was marginally more responsive than the 535i. i had the choice between a loaded up 535i or a decently optioned 550i. Same price....... I got the 550i. Gadgets get old, but the grin on your face when you hit that gas doesn't

the google option is brilliant,
if you have sat nav, and looking for an address or a company , type it ,( as in your labtop) and not only it finds it, but it takes you right to the door, from wherever you are, |

I'd say it depends on what is important to you - engine vs comfort and gadgetary. Some people don't care about satnav, hud, and comfort seats. Some care about reading lights and soft close doors. I belong to the second group, primarily because I'm a casual urban driver a 520d is all I need - not that I wouldn't appreciate a bigger engine - it's just that it will be underutilised.

I didn't get the active steering as the motoring press didn't think very much of it, but the options I value most are as follows: 1. Adaptive drive/VDC - very noticeable differences between modes. 2. Visibility pack - amazing headlights that turn into corners. 3. Heated comfort seats - great if you suffer from back pain. I don't miss the HUD as the instruments are very clear and well placed, the Pro Sat Nav is excellent, but I could easily live without it and if your cash is limited, I'd recommend you get the AD/VDC instead. I haven't used the split/fold rear seats yet, but I'm sure there'll be a day when I'm glad I have them and I'm still wondering whether the rear view camera was worth the expense. The standard cruise control is excellent and intuitive to use, so if you ditch the active cruise, lane change and HUD, that should just about pay for the 35d engine. |

Thank you, im going for the HUD. Navigation, and speed limit maybe later. Heated seats and heated steering wheel i think. Are you driving the 535D. If, please tell about the engine. I've googled the 535D f10 but I can't find any test's or review's. Only one 90 sec. video test |
