melted angel eye tube?

gang,

i just bought my e90 a little over a month ago. i noticed the angel eyes were very dim, but no codes. so, after some research here(thanks!) i pulled the wheel and fender liner and investigated. turns out the PO took the glass lens out of the metal holder in front of the bulb and replaced it with a blue glass to get a blue look. its an 06 so i guess that how folks went after the led look then? i dunno. so i took the blue glass out and reassembled, ordered some mtec led's from e92lighting and waited. got the lights and finally was able to put them in. guess it was about two weeks total. turns out the missing glass allowed the bulb/heat to melt the tips of the angel eye tube causing a blister and discoloration. i was able to snap the blister off and clean it up enough that they seem to work just fine but i was wondering if anyone else experienced this and how they cleaned it up? i feel they could be brighter?

sounds like one or more of the following...

1. blue lens helped diffuse the heat and could have originally been clear ?
2. the replacement bulbs you purchased are higher wattage then stock = melting plastic.

I've never heard of this. I have weisslicht LEDs and i removed the lens....mine was clear.

On an 06? doubt it......lighting is not covered under CPO either

yes. you are right there is supposed to be clear glass there, but there was no glass since i removed the blue piece and nothing to replace it with. i didnt replace any bulbs at the time, just put it back together with no glass. i couldnt see how that little piece of glass protected it from melting? guess i was wrong! the new mtec leds work great and require the glass to be removed anyway, so all good there. i had to break off the blister and sort of sand the back of the tube cause the light was shining through discolored and uneven. i guess what i am asking is if anyone would have an idea on how to clean the tube up better to allow the light to shine through more crisp, or do i just have to deal? thanks for the help so far guys!

I'm in a similar situation. The driver's side halo was dim, ordered some LED replacement bulbs and when I went to install them, the glass was missing on the driver's side and had melted the end of the ring. It was charred too. I removed as much as I could, but it also shortened the ring. Now the driver's side is still dim compared to the passenger side. I wanted to replace the headlight until I saw they are ~$700 each. Hoping someone make replacement rings and I'll take apart the headlight and replace it myself.
