Caller ID

When I receive a call in the car, the name of the person calling me shows up on the navi. After picking up the call, the name changes to unknown caller.
Why is this happening?

I just noticed this behavior last night. When someone calls me, the display correctly shows the name of the caller (while it rings). But when I hit "Accept" to answer the call, the display switches to "Unknown number." It stays that way throughout the call. The display also shows the recognized name as a "Missed call."

I thought it might have been a phone issue (I have a Sony Ericsson K700i), but now I am thinking iDrive bug...

My car is from June 2005 production. Anybody else with this issue? Can anybody with a more recently produced car test this and see if it behaves the same way?

I've got a Sony Ericsson T610 on Orange iin the UK.
The car has SatNavPro (September build).
All of the phone's numbers are stored by the car, so I can voice dial any of the names just by saying 'Dial name' follwed by the name! I didn't have to set of the car's voice dial phonebook to do this.
I asked my wife to ring the mobile from home, whilst linked to the car with Bluetooth.
The display told me it was the home number, which is storerd in the phone's address book.
The only time is says 'Unknown number' calling, is when the caller has witheld their number & this only happens before I choose to accept or reject it. Once the name or number of the caller is identified, it hasn't ever changed to 'Unknown caller'.
Perhaps any of you with problems like this could try using a friend's T610?

Thanks for the input, vivekk.

I think you have answered it for me. You have a more recently built car, presumably with newer software. I don't think this is a phone issue, but an iDrive software issue.

RyBMW... one more question: does your phone display show a small triangle to the left of the signal strength indicator? (See attached picture). The manual says this appears when you are "roaming." I am certain I am not roaming, as I have a Cingular national plan! Now, the photo below was taken while on the road in Europe, but I'm still getting the triangle here in the good ol' US of A...

That is because you have "Missed calls," which is what the "phone" icon represents. Because of the issue we are discussing in this thread, the incoming caller ID is recognized momentarily, but it immediately switches to "Unknown caller" and considers the caller ID as a missed call...

Display your Missed Calls by navigating to the Communications menu, and then come out of there. The phone icon will disappear... and I wonder if the triangle appears instead?

I can't really confirm this, but I have an educated guess that the triangle is actually showing (by mistake) the roaming status of the built-in SOS phone.

Reason I say this is that I was in an area where I know I wasn't roaming for my personal phone, and there was no indication of roaming on the handset. However, I was in a different calling area for -other- cell providers (went out of the MSA into an RSA).

In any case, I haven't seen the triangle come back since activating my 1 free year of SOS/BMW Assist service.

I don't have Idrive.

Does anyone know which cell provider carries the BMW Assist calls?

Now, does anybody get Caller ID when doing Call Waiting?

This is what I think is missing.

ramm,

from what i've read in these forums as well as other places, your phone actually does roam and that's why you get the triangle.

what's happening is that you are moving from a native cingular tower to a non-cingular tower (old AT&T maybe). Since you are on a national plan, your phone is programmed to not display "roaming" however it still passes that on to the car.

I get the same thing every day in the same spot on my commute to and from work.

Coincidentally, I can't make international calls when I'm in this one area, but as soon as the triangle goes out I can. I once called Cingular about it and they said it was because I wasn't on one of their towers and whosever I was on blocked me from making an international call....
