16" all season tires in the snow
Hey guys,
I live in Calgary and picked up my new 323i on Thursday evening before we received all that snow this past weekend. I left my car in my garage all weekend and now that the bad weather is over, I am itching to get behind the wheel. It has Continental all season run flats and I'm wondering what to expect. I am certain that I'm going to order some snow tires in the next couple of days but will I get by with the all seasons for a week or two? I keep hearing the E90 is a great winter car when running snow tires and not so great when running performance summer tires but what about the all seasons? Thanks |

I'd be SUPER CAREFUL driving anywhere in Calgary with all-season tires. Maybe on wednesday or thursday when the temp get over +5C. But today, with -18C, itis downright dangerous, even if the road has been plowed.
Best recommendation - get winter tires on that car ASAP. Call Kal-Tire at North Hill or 42nd Street (stay away from Chinook) and ask if they have Nokian Hakkapellitta R in your size. I live in NW Calgary and I drive my 335i (without Xdrive) skiing every weekend. I cannot rave enough about the Hakkas. Most of those crazy ice racers run Hakkas, as do most BMW driving instructors. My ski buddy, who has a Toyota Tundra 4x4, insists we take my car skiing as he says it is way more stable in the snow at highway speeds. |

I have winter tires (17" Continental T810S) on my E92 335i and I could not imagine driving it with all seasons in the winter. It has more power than a 323I but I would think the overall characteristics would generally be the same.
Be safe and get winters. Better for take off, handling, braking, etc.. with winters. If you don't do it for yourself, do it for others on the road.

True. My car came with the same setup as yours and I got stuck in front of my house with very little snow. I went with winters on the stock rims and no more stuck.

Hey guys,
Thanks for all the input! Blizzak LM-25's mounted on MSW type 14 winter alloys are on the way from Tirerack! I should have them by the middle of next week. I can't say its been great getting around, but it's better than I expected. Good to know I'll have nothing to worry about when I get my new snow tires. |

All seasons are useless when there is snow on the road. They do perform fine when the roads have been completly cleared after a few days without snow. But even if there is 1 cm of snow on the ground, its game over...
