Was yours remapped ?
Im just sat here wondering if this spate of failed turbos is occurring on remapped or std cars ? (mines remapped and on 76000 miles and im getting nervous!!)

Yeah, sorry....apologies Ed.
Car was remapped by the way but back off 20k ago as it was too harsh. I just got a price of 400 to rebuild the turbo and being pretty technical, i am hoping i could take it out in the car? Anyone know if thats possibe? looks tight in there. Going to look at a couple of Nissan Quasquai's now. Have to weigh up the cost of changing to one of these versus 400 and a couple of days off work to do the work to the BM. Will be simple maths imo A |

Mate how can you swap from a BMW to a Nissan for the sake of £400-£700.
I would need to be paid £700 to drive a Nissan (unles it was a GTR) Go for a walk, chill out do what you need to do but swapping for a Nissan does appear to be a bit of an over reaction. Hope it all gets sorted either way. |

To be fair. Edowen is a special case. Going out of his way to be a tosser on almost every topic as he does.

as for the op, seems a shame to change to a Datsun for the sake of one fairly common repair even if it is a few hundred quid. At the end of the day you've got to fix the turbo anyway, might as well get some more use out of it ?

I understand the OPs frustration, but do 320d Turbos fail at a greater rate than those on say VAG cars, Fords etc? If they do, there is cause for concern, if not, it's just down to 'the joys of motoring'. I guess that if it spent some of it's time mapped, even removed 20K miles ago, may well have reduced the turbo's life, particularly if the map was that aggressive.

A Nissan Qashqi (or whatever)?! NOOO they are utter cr4p. I can see the good points of most cars but the one I hired (7k miles, petrol) was one of the worst cars I have ever driven.
Cack bootspace despite the external size, horrid dash and the handling was appalling -so bad that when I had to swerve slightly to dodge debris on the M4, I nearly lost it. ANYTHING but one of those - RAV4, X-Trail, Freelander, etc. |

I got my missus a brand spanker for Christmas and it is an excellent car. If you buy at top of the range you get all the kit as standard - Bose, touch screen Sat Nav & iPod control, Panoramic roof, Leather, Bluetooth, heated seats, reversing camera, privacy glass etc). The car takes us, the dog and as much luggage as we want in perfect comfort and with the 2.0l diesel it clips along very well and returns 40+mpg. In terms of handling there is an initial bit of body roll, but overall body control (for such a tall car) is good and certainly not dangerous. It's not going to handle like a sports car so I don't drive it like one. Check the mag reviews mate - they all love them, epsecially the new facelifted models (60 plate onwards). No bad reviews of dodgy handling, only, as I have reported, a bit of initial roll, which is to be expected from a comfortable car with such a high centre of gravity. As for recommending a freelander in lieu; you certainly wouldn't have any safety issues with rolling or whatnot - given it will spend most of the time you own it in a dealership, wheels off, having diffs/transfer boxes/driveshafts etc replaced. I love Land rover as a brand, but the freelander is shocking in terms of quality.

Alas Shep mate, our budget doesnt stretch that far at all......we had aimed for 10k.
But, utterly heartbreaking experience at the Nissan dealers........they offered 6k for ours and didnt even suss the turbo was on its way. They dont actually care tbh. SIX F U C K I N G GRAND! No chance....we just cant afford that. I did have an interesting call with a wee turbo guy in Armagh...abotu 20 miles form me who offered to take our car, remove, fix and refit the turbo for around 500 and offers a 12 month warranty on the turbo. We are actually going to have to go that route tbh......just cant afford anythign else. Jesus, you just cant have money these days. And I thought the Clio was being expensive J |

Interestingly too......this chap is almost 100% sure that the very early variants of the E9x 320d still had problems with the breather.
He is nearly sure it is the foam insert type. Only on super early ones, which ours is ffs. J |

Sheps - maybe it was. Seemed fairly well specced and wasn't the bigger version. I was initially pretty pleased as it was an upgrade from what I booked but it shocked me TBH.
Maybe it was a rogue with issues of some sort? Just not my cup of tea. Hired a top end X-Trail (again an upgrade!) and was pretty impressed. Not sure what the Qashqui does that the X-trail doesn't? And many are 4WD looking but 2WD - Noooo! JLR - yep worse than a hearse but less embarrassing than a hairdressers special |
