Real world pre ED 320d economy
Thinking about changing 318i for pre ED 320d. Anyone care to comment on what mpg they get when doing mainly motorway miles. Thanks

Well due to going on one about twice a week with 'urban' stop start stuff for the rest, mine is only 33-36mpg.
Reset it once on a m'way day and it shot upto 60mpg or thereabouts so I guess mid to late 40s is what I would be getting if I used the m'way everyday over time. |

I mostly get around 42mpg with a mix of my short commute and a few longer journeys. When I reset before a long trip I got 47mpg.
Will be doing a long mostly MWay trip next week to see friends and rellies so am going to reset before that and see what I get.... |

Interesting thread and something I've been pondering over myself. I've been toying with the idea of swapping the X3 to an E91 2.0d but, given the short trips the car travels, the mpg really takes a nose-dive making the change less effective as I'd hoped.
If Tippo is getting 33-36mpg with mixed driving I think I'd be hard pressed to do any better which, given the X3 does 27mpg, really isn't the massive improvement I'd have hoped for which has given me cold feet about a change. For drivers who go on the motorway more often however it's a beltingly efficient engine.

PURE town mileage: 32-35. Less if you drive like me.
Motorway mileage: 50 Two years in... The ed version really is a LOT more economical, especially around town..

Yeah, mean to put that caveat in, the I understood the ED version to be quite a bit better. Ed, so you're getting 53mpg from mixed driving, that's pretty impressive actually.

Mine's an ED and an auto. It's economical, but forget BMW's figures, you would need to be driving downhill all the time to get anywhere near them!
Purely town driving, you can start to get near 40 mpg, but short trips knock it back to mid 30's. Just doing long trips on motorways I get c47 driving it hard (for me) and c53 driving for economy. Winter conditions drop it by c4-5 mpg. There are so many variables, mpg can be anywhere between 32 and 56, however, the equivalent petrol car would probably range from c24 - 42 on a like-for-like basis. With the diesel, it takes a long time to warm up. Seems like 10-15 minutes to me. Then it just feels unburstable, like you can flog it all day and still get high mpg's. To avoid engine wear, I just treat it with kid gloves when cold. |

Yup, cant really complain on that. About 10 percent better than my outgoing "normal" ed M sport (177).

I get an average of around 53mpg, thats with some 11 mile commutes mixed with motorway and runs in to Wales.
If I were getting as low as 33mpg I'd be checking the thrmostat. Jeff1232 mine takes less than 5 minutes to warm up, check your coolant temp after a run. |

I've got a E91 320D Sport Tourer (Auto) with the 163BHP engine. I've had it for a couple of years and have noticed the following.
1. When the engine is cold the MPG is no better than a petrol engine and it takes longer than a petrol to warm through. 2. My normal average over a 50mile commute on motorway and town roads gives between 40-42 mpg if driven fairly sensibly. 3. On long motorway drives I can get around 45-50mpg at normal motorway speeds. I've never managed over 50MPG even on a 400 mile motorway drive. 4. Turning the aircon off seems to make a big difference. |

Have just done my 700 mile odd round trip last week of mostly MWay miles and got an indicated 50.4 mpg, although according to Fuelly it was 49.1 mpg. I had the cruise set to an indicated 77mph unless the traffic was bad...

I drive e90 320d pre-ED ~45 mile roundtrip to work daily on a good open b-road, cruise at 60 there and home. I normally reset mpg after every fill. Most I've ever got for the duration on the tank (650-700 miles) is 51.4. Normal driving I end up either 49.5 or 48.7. Can't complain!
