The making of the N54 custom turbos by SJL Custom!

Hi all,

Well this time I think I have a shop that will complete the modifications on the N54 turbos.

They are going to start machining this week and everything has been going really well.

The pics that I am posting, you will notice a huge difference in both exhaust and compressor side.

So they are hoping that they should have the prototype ready to go by the end of the month!

But I am going to keep my fingers cross just the same!

Enjoy the pics!

Looking really good Far! Massive size difference indeed. Things really are starting to take shape. Thanks for doing this and documenting, look forward to the results.

This looks like it's going to be an awesome project...! Is that a black Bentley Continental in the background of one of the pictures?

What is going on exactly... in terms of what parts are being put in/replaced, etc. Is this a complete turbo swap like the RB turbos, or just the turbine? (Sorry for the n00b questions).

Looks like the dealer will 100% think that you're running "stock turbos", when in fact you ARE running stockers but with a bigger wheel...

Nice sleeper turbo...I don't expect massive gains, but I love how you are going with a huge wheel in the stock housing...

Little more power without worrying about warranty...

Yes I believe that is a slick black Bentley.

Well we are replacing all the major parts, the parts you are seeing have been shipped from Mitsubishi ( I really can't believe that my German car has Japaneses parts.).

I really don't want to compare them to the RB turbos because SJL is still working on the other parts e.g. wastegate.

But what I will say these will be a different animal when they are done!

This is what is also going on, from SJL Custom:

They will be working on the wastegate solution this week. They have the engineering part done just need to start making the parts. The stock materials used are really cheap and soft, thus creating the result everyone encounters. My compressor wheel is a little more efficient as far as they can tell. Fit? everything will bolt up like stock.

Future developments will include lightweight billet compressor wheels, Titanium Turbine wheels, and the possibility of ball bearing cartridges, all reducing the amount of turbo lag and spool up time. First they want to get these done and see what we get as far as dyno and performance numbers.

As the RB's use the biggest Mitsubishi components that can be fitted into the OEM housings I must say any claim of a gain is nothing more than hype. Just wanted to set that straight.

I'm confused by your statement.

Are you saying these won't outperform the RB's or they won't outperform the stockers?

Can't wait for more details on these guys, they are def a step ahead of a few different guys selling upgraded compressors & clipped turbines. I'm surprised they didn't go with a billet compressor wheel to start from though.

Since this is a replication of an existing product (RBs), it's pretty bold to make unfounded claims of being superior in any way. This same trail has been blazed for a while now.

Expecting 50hp more than the RB turbos? No... I'll believe that when I see it. Great project nonetheless

Woops, I missed the part about them assuming it'll make more power.

Did SJL have a pair of RB's to compare them before making that assumption?
