320d water pump failure

Driving home last night my car lost power then the temp warning came on, so pulled over and turned engine off. There was water everywhere and when i tried putting more in the expansion tank you could see it running out from behind one of the pullies on the block, so i was pretty sure it was the water pump that had failed. Had the car recovered and the garage have confirmed this and thankfully the warranty company will pay out.
Im just slightly concerned that there could be other damage due to overheating. I drove for maybe 2 miles after i noticed a drop in power, is this because the engine was nipping up or is it a mode the engine goes into to prevent damage?
