HDD Nav Map update - The next chapter!!
After giving up with parts departments, I emailed the group workshop manager at Williams BWM manchester about how to update the Maps on my 09 car with Idrive 2 and HDD Pro nav....
Here's the response: Dear Mike, There are two ways to update your Navigation System. 1. You purchase the navigation Premium update 2011 DVD. (BMW part no. 65.90.2.182.354). Cost £18.42 +vat. You must also purchase the activation code that we download for you, (BMW part no.65.90.2.181.739). Cost.£155 + vat. Even though the update is called a DVD, it is in fact a USB stick which you must load into the hardrive and can only be done while the vehicle is in motion, you must also manually enter the enable code in the I-drive. In order to get full functionality of the 7 digit Postcode search function you must have the vehicle programmed at the dealer. We charge a flat rate for this of 1.5 hrs labour cost. £184.50 +vat. (Programming time for a vehicle of your spec may take upto 5hrs) Total cost for this option would be £ 429.40 inc vat. 2. You purchase the enable code only, we program the vehicle plus an additional programming session where we update the NAV of 1 hr. Cost £184.50+vat Total cost £555 inc vat. Option one is the cheaper option, it is less inconvenient but you will have the stick and code should you need to re-load it at a later date or you can wipe it and use as a normal 8Gb stick. Option two is more expensive but everything is done for you and will be working when you pick the vehicle up. (A copy of the enable code will be left in your vehicle handbook pack should the vehicle require future programming at another dealer or if you sell the vehicle on.) If you decide to take either option, please allow the vehicle to be booked in for a full day due to the time required for programming. If you have any further enquiries please mail me or telephone. Regards, Wow! bargain! £429 for a sat nav update! At least I end up with a 8GB USB stick, worth errmm, about £5. |

What's quite amusing is the way the email is written, it's as if the options available are a good buy, and the writer would be quite surprised if the offer would be met with howls of laughter and sheer amazement. |

F*ckin' rip off!!
Can't believe they can't just supply a USB stick with the appropriate data and a key code on it for say £100-150 ish? Surely they would sell 10x more copies and actually end up making more money?! |

Funny you should say that Ian, as mine has to go in Monday for cold running software updates and they need it for two days. And they want to charge me for a loaner, which won't be happening

I'd fit a tracker and take the mileage, you just know that'll be up and down the M20 like it had been taken by Joe Chav on his way to and back from a pikey wedding |

My car has ISTA V39.2 on it, and they've confirmed that from V39.0 onwards the nav will run full 7 digit postcode search when loaded with 2011 maps. So my car doesn't need updating, leaving the small matter of £170 for the maps to cough up. |

My dealer uses a wireless network to update, which can sometimes "bug out". I think they are covering themselves by a large margin, although my mate works for them and I will been drinking with him tomorrow night, just to make sure all goes well

Some will have read my thread on this subject. I honestly don't think BMW 'get' it. And as you say, they will sell far more updates if the price were reasonable - £100 - £150 and 'simple' to DIY.
If you buy a brand new car, you probably won't need to update the maps for a couple of years. If you buy a second hand car, you will not be minded to spend this sort of money unless you need the sat nav a lot. At least I can buy a 2011 map disc off t'internet for my 130i for £30. |

Well when I had my HDD maps updated to 2010-2 last year, the dealer charged me the £155+vat for the maps and did it all. I was never made aware of any additional work, I just paid for the maps and picked the car up later and it was all done............

Is there ANYTHING on these cars that doesnt require a £200 vehicle 'recode'?
'Hi there, I'd like to use some Shell VPower in my 3 Series' 'No problems sir, we'll code it at £200' |
