It's way to early to tell what this car will be worth but most cars will depreciate. Take a look at the BMW Z8 for example. Most dealers were doing markups of $40-50K over MSRP ($139K), when this car first came out. Now, you can find over a dozen of them for less than $95K, with under 10K miles. These cars were built 10 years ago.... Just some food for thought... Buy what you like, and enjoy it |

My opinion is it will be higher than the 40-50% range.
I will use my 99 M roadster as an example. I sold it at 40% of MSRP after 10 years. I did try selling it one other time at 75% at 4 years, I think I would have been successful had I lowered it to 60%. By 2003, Z3 M Roadster production was done and there were 10000 Ms in NA. Mine was competing with cars with S54 engines. If the 1M turns out as good as I think it will, and the limited number of vehicles coming to NA. I believe the resale values will be high for vehicles well maintained with lower than average mileage.

In 4 years, there will be lots of new cars out, including a new M3, possibly a new 1M, as well as competition from other makes. They will all be designed from the ground up and will be more integrated (not bolt-on). This will all negatively impact 1M resale. |

If they stick to the 450 in the UK and the press love it when tested then it should hold it's value. Can't see it dropping below 30k for a well spec low mileage car.

When I sold the M Roadster there were plenty of better cars out there that were far advanced, and it still sold at 40% of MSRP at 10 years. The guy bought it because it was the only Estoril Blue M Roadster within 300 miles of where he lived. If there really ends up being a low production number for this car, it will most likely hold it is value better than a standard BMW. If the car comes out and is a dud, it will be a different story.

"Dud" may be the wrong term to consider with respect to future market value. In 4-5 years' time, there may be many other factors that determine a car's value in general, including energy costs.

Big question is, which new M-car in this category will be released in 5 years. My guess is, that with the big success of the 1M and its short development time, we could easily see a 1M successor within 3-4 years, which will lead to a even further price decay.
But in case of no successor, that car could be pretty price stable to sell. |

Another factor to think about is the HPFP situation. I assume they haven't fixed it on this iteration of the engine and having a known problem, despite BMW's warranty on it, still doesn't help the resale value.

Most cars don't become a classic until 20-30 years down the road and there are only a few left in existance. By that time, the teenagers who lusted after one but couldn't afford one, now are entering their midlife crisis period, have money to burn and can afford and are willing to pay exorbitant amounts for a car they wanted from their youth. Of course, if we run out of oil in 20 years, you probably wont be able to give the car away. |

It might depreciate less due to the limit availability, but it won't be a collectable. If BMW managed to make it better than the E30 M3, in terms of bring out the joy in driving, it would be a cult car like that one.
That's if the new 1M/M2 even with a 4 banger doesn't put the 1M in the history books. I would say the final hooray of the M3 V8 Competition with a performance exhaust would be more collectable, depending on final number of cars - first and last V8 NA M3.

I don't think the 1M has much risk of being declared a "dud" but I will still be holding my breath when Clarkson and Car Magazine do their reviews. If either hate it then the 1M will be "tarnished" forever in the eyes of many people.

I'm still waiting to hear from my BMW dealer about the resale value of my 1M for purposes of PCP finance. Mine will have a fairly decent spec mostly audio/comms/nav stuff. I'm hoping for a decent residual value overall... if you compare it to competitors such as the Audi TTRS and Cayman. I'll post on here when I hear from them.
5 years is a long time though and for all we know there may be no oil left in the world by then... |

The best place to start on what the resale value of the 1M will be is with the dealer. They should have a pretty good idea since they will know what the trade in value would be which most people will base their resale value on.
