Dealer ruined my old E46 paint..

Well had the dealer repair my bumper that they messed up, and i guess they took a PC with polish to the whole car and now there is just holograms and just crazy effects all over the hood and side of the car!

I just washed and clayed the whole car...

What can i do to slightly correct this for the time being, i have meguiars ultiamte compound and meguiars step 2 polish at the moment, possible to do anything with these or anything over the counter i can use to get the paint somewhat back to normal before i throw a coat of wax on this thing.

BTW car is a 02 E46 and i think its oreitn blue, its metallic on the darker side blue.

Thanks.

I cant get relly get any good shots in the garage of the effect, you can see it nice and clear in the sun, but its gonna be raining for the next 2 days in my area and cloudy so i wont be able to get anything worth much.

But its exactly like this:

Absolutely needs to be polished, probably 2-steps to get it back to looking right. Depending on what your skills/willingness to DIY, you could either take care of it yourself or take it to a pro. Nothing OTC or any sort of clay/wax will help mask holograms though.

Thanks, yea that is what i was thinking, i just clayed it since i know there was gonna be work to be done.

so no real polish OTC esp via hand is gonna even mask or correct this right?
Like i said i can get anything at the store and i have megs polish and ultimate compound in my garage but rest of my stuff is either sold or with my cousin.. And god knows when ill be back to get it done.

You could try a test section to be sure, but I doubt it. You will likely need the power and consistency of a machine (used properly this time) to get results. Agreed with the above though, see if the dealer will reimburse you for a professional detail. If you need a recontamination, I'm sure someone will chime in based on your location. If not here, then try Autopia. There are a LOT of really bad detailers out there, so you want to be sure it's going to someone who really knows what they're doing (even more so now since they're fixing a pretty significant problem).

Here is my 2 cents to that.

If your paint looks like the photo you linked to, that was not done by a PC or a Random orbital polisher.......a wool pad and a rotary in the hands of a neo detailer did that.

Depending on how bad it will take some time, the car is a dark color it might take an extra step.

The dealership NEEDS to pay for that damage, in order to fix it properly they will have to remove some of the clear coat now.....you need to take tons of photos, go directly to the owner (no one else) and show them the photos and car in person. Be firm and unwaivering in your request to have a pro fix the work.

If you are near Orange county I have a couple of shops that I really trust will fix the dealerships issues....

PM me if you are interested.

Cheers,
GREG

Thanks for the advice guys, much appreciated...

Im about to just order a damn porter cable with some Menzerna Polishes... would that be able to do the trick? looks like Menzerna compound, polish and a finish polish would be my best bet?

looks like 300 or so bucks but fk it, need something and while in NY cant wait.

That would work. Plus the PC will always come in handy. Gl

I have to agree that based on that photo that damage was not a DA or PC but a rotary buffer. The only way anything like might happen with the DA/PC is maybe on a badly resprayed panel. I highly doubt anything by hand will fix that, your going to need to polish by machine to get those Holograms and trails out of the clear and be failrly aggressive working up to a finishing polish. If you're buying everything brand new $300 is about right for a DA, pads and polishes. Might want to see what a pro would charge to correct that.

It seems as though whoever used the porter cable on your paint used the wrong combination of pad and polish which caused the marring. Or they may have just did a one step when a multiple step polish was needed starting with the most abrasive polish followed by a lighter polish, etc..

Yea they either used a rotary, or the used a sh*tty aggressive polish and worked it too fast.

Eitherway you can correct that with a PC and Menzernas and collection of pads.

Probably 2 steps at a minimum.
