Do you like your job?

?

Not asking if you "like" to work... I'm sure there won't be too many people who will say yes to that. However the people who genuinely like their job are probably more likely to answer positively to the question.

I'm starting a new job next Monday and I guess I am curious about other people's career paths. I'm leaving a really good job that paid well and allowed me to work from home and will be going to a job that pays a bit less and will cause me to have to commute 30 minutes every morning and evening. Obviously more of a time commitment, but there will also be more expenses... fuel/new wordrobe, etc.

No one can quite grasp why I'd do something like this... and FWIW it was completely my choice to do so. It's not that I hated my old job... I think I'm just looking for something different? A change of pace perhaps? More opportunity? I dunno..

I really want to get my own thing going... but these days my industry is actually shrinking and with budgets being super tight, it probably won't be a "smart" decision to try something like that for at least couple more years. So I guess I'm just biding my time until that opportunity arrises.

Yeah yeah... csb.

I actually love to work. I love my job, if you can even call it that. Do what you love, love what you do. I will live by that til the day I die.

I like my job.

Working at Bose, I pretty much get paid to stand around, talk to people, and sell audio product. Easy, though boring at times. It's not something I want to do for the rest of my life though. Only while i'm in school.

Like the above post: do what you love, love what you do.

Good luck with the new position.

I like my job. The pay is ok but the bennies are awesome. I wish I didn't have to commute 55 miles each way, but that's the price I pay for keeping this job. I couldn't find anything nearly as good closer to home. Wifey works 2 miles from home and makes 30% more than I do with the same bennies, so we won't be moving anytime soon.

Im in IT... been doing it for almost 15 years now.
Do i like it? Yes.
Do i want to do it for the rest of my life? FUCK NO!

Have a cushy IT job at a University, but unfortunately it pays 20% less than i made in the "real world" before getting laid off from the last job, so I bust ass on the side to make up for the "lost" amount. Really sick of working 12-14 hour days.

People always come to me with business ideas because i'm a "computer guy". These ideas are usually too late to the party and/or involve me doing free work.
Like "hey man, can you make me a porn site? i heard those make money" or "can you write me a database? But I can't pay you for another year, im still paying off my car"

I will never stop until I can make music for a living. Got a 9-5 now, and don't care too much for it. I see this as something that is taking care of expenses momentarily, a stepping stone.

But I don't think I can work a 9-5 and be happy.

LOL... That's the spirit!

I want to own my own place... but the reality is that it'd never be a 9-5. I'm actually cool with that as long as I can justify it by the company being mine.

One day.

I can agree with that. I just wanna do what I love. Music is in my blood. As long as that doesn't run my life, there's no way I can be content.

If you "own" the place, you get a 5-9 (if you want to be successful).

Exactly... who invented the 5 day (and then some) work week?!

I don't like my job and it's getting to the point where its affecting my life. So I advise everyone to try and find something you love. When you do, 12 hour days are no problem.
I work a senior (not mgmt) level IT position and am behind a screen all day. That is not my personality at all. I feel every day is a wasted day of my life doing something I dislike for so long and under stress, on top of that.

I don't wanna hijack, but can some of you that love and/own your job mention at least what industry its in? I know you don't want to give any info away, but I find it useful in conversations like these to see what businesses are doing well as well as gauging where people's interests are.

Agreed. Your life becomes based around your paycheck, and no matter how much you make, you'll never have enough. I too would like to hear from those who are successful and love what they are doing,

No worries... hijack away. This was meant to be a discussion thread, so it doesn't matter how off-topic it really gets.

FWIW I had seriously thought about switching industries too. I have devoted my entire young-adult life to kicking ass and taking names and at 30 years old, I'm just really fucking exhausted.

I've made good money and done everything I've set out to do (thus far), but I am totally burnt the f out. I told myself that I'd try to do it one more time for another company and see if what was killing me was just the old management I was working under, or just the industry... we'll see how things get off the ground when I start next week. *shrug*

Sad thing is that the harder you work, the more people take advantage of you and your abilities/work ethic/talent (whatever you want to call it) and the only way to break free is to either do a career 180, or start to work for yourself. Wish the economy was a tiny bit better. If it was I'd be doing the latter....

My (unfortunate) reality is that I'm not worth as much in any other industry as I am to this one. My knowledge and understanding far exceeds my age. I also have no real issues working 14hr days as long as there is some kind of reward there for doing so... but I refuse to line someone else's pockets while at the same time literally killing myself in the process. I am over that shit (which is why I quit my old job). Again, not because I hated it... just on principal.

I work in the retail fixturing industry. Think store interiors/displays, etc.

No offense but that's kind of stupid (to the people criticizing a standard work week). A five day work week provides people with stability and makes contributing to society a regular process, instead of something random and unpredictable. If you don't like that and you don't have the aspiration to get that money it's not like you're forced into that cycle. I see nothing wrong with it. It also makes weekends more enjoyable.

And on-topic: I enjoy my job as long as I'm not dealing with dipshits.
