Need "base support system"?

I have a 2011 XDrive35d. I want to attach a Thule 867 Tahoe Rooftop Cargo Bag - but I don't have the base support system/cross bars. Have others attached a cargo bag without the cross bars, or do I def need to add them?

I do have the roof rails.
