It Starts... Offer for 1M at 4K over MSRP
So I got a call today from one of the dealers I have my name on the list with. They said they had an open Allocation and ask for me to spec the car out and e-mail the spec sheet to them.
A while later I received an e-mail saying that another person had already offered $3995 over MSRP, asking how much I would be willing to pay. I turned this down cold. As I mentioned in my e-mail I will only pay MSRP no higher. To my knowledge this is the first dealer actually trying to charge over MSRP. I will wait for a better deal from one of the other dealers on my list.

I'd have simply told them to sell it to that guy then. Look, it's a seller's market when a hot new anything hits the shelves. If somebody is willing to pay $4k over MSRP then that's what the dealer will take for it. I wouldn't panic if you really want one.

I say that's BS on the dealer's part, they are playing poker's bluff. Don't be surprised if they call you saying the imaginary $4K over MSRP guy faded.
IIRC there was one other reported dealer on the Left Coast (naturally) that called for a 'market adjustment' of 5K over MSRP.

I just contacted a bunch of dealers last week and there are still dealers out there with allocations. Most are asking msrp. I had one call me that they want $7000 over msrp and another $5000 over msrp. I wanna know what they are smoking. The one asking $7000 said they sold the first allocation $10000 over msrp. But after contacting these dealers, it seems like it's not as hard to get one as I originally thought.

Interesting... My dealership is only getting 4 allocated to us for the year. We are the largest BMW dealership in the DC/VA/MD area. I would have traded in my lease if it was easy enough to get one. Maybe it's easier to get one in other areas of the country.

Yeah he should play it cool and may get his way yet. Lots of dealers are liars looking to screw you out of what they can screw you out of. You just want your car for a fair price but to them it's all a game for money.

I should mention that the person I talked to was not the SA I have been working with. My normal guy is on Vacation. The person I originally started work with told me MSRP so I am hoping he will honor this when he returns.
I do not have a deposit at this dealer but I was told I am next in line for June Allocation. I just called on the off chance they had an extra Allocation for May. I am in no hurry at this point. My ace in the hole dealer will hopefully come through with one and I know it will be MSRP or possible ED discount since I am a repeat buyer. Dealers suck that try and play these games, I have never done business with one that does.

He wouldn't take a deposit until a price was agree on. He was just trying to get a bidding war going.

Is this a normal occurence in the states? In the UK i've never heard of a franchised main dealer asking for more than list price on any car, I don't know if its illegal or just not the done thing but that sounds a really poor show from your dealers!

I went into my dealer in Miami,Braman, today and talked with him about getting my 1m which is at VPC Brunswick. He told me he had 70 cars on hold for EPA approval. These are 2012's and my 1m. He said Braman is the largest single location dealer in U.S. (3,000 cars in 2010) He also said the were the biggest seller of M cars (Beverley Hills is second) He has two built cars. He has 5 people with deposits down and no allocations. He isn't taking any more deposits. My car was sold for MSRP.

Your dealer may be getting less than 5 total, he only took up to 5 deposits in the event some people fall out. |

I saw the allocations for Apr and May (all 42 of them). Braman was one of only 3 dealers that had 2 cars allocated to them out of this first initial pool, the other is indeed the one in Beverly hills, and interestingly, the 3rd one was in NJ and I did not think they are all that big (though I believe they are expecting 5, which is a healthy number, relatively speaking). So the formula seems to work: big/prominent dealers (and ///M sellers) get more. However, since they service a bigger market, it may be proportionately tougher for customers to get one. You might be better off being 2nd in a WY dealer than say 6th at dealer like Braman.

I work for a stealership and from what I remember, BMW frowns on this heavily. Another dealership in the Atlanta area was charging over list on M-cars and BMW paid the difference to the customer and debited the dealership (or so I heard). Not sure if they are still doing that, but I've been here since 95' and I recall that happened with a couple of Z8s.
