What the hell is it?

Dealer has a few of these 'in the system' and looks like I've claimed their last one via my deposit check. As the conversation progressed, it sounded more and more like the standard allocation story with warnings like - this may not turn into a car, and if it does it may not be until Sept, etc.

To those w/ insider knowledge - what's the likelihood of this 'Special Release' actually turning into a customer car? The other requests had actual customer names as well - who also presumably put down a deposit check. BTW he mentioned that the US gets 500 cars, but from sources here I thought it was more like 1,000.

Just trying to understand my chances here.

****UPDATE****

I'm status "047". With a "Requested Build Date" of 6/22. My name and options are also listed on their print out.

Does this mean a production # is imminent? The sales rep sounded like it would defn turn into a car, and was miles better than being on one of their salesman's waiting lists. But I haven't found out conclusively what status 047 actually means.

What the hell is status 047?

BTW - my dealer just got their first 1M in - AW, loaded, except for upgraded stereo. I went in to view it,.... rear looks faaat and wiiide. Love the big 'ole wheels in the fatter fender flares. And with the steering wheel and power seats adjusted down - I have tons of headroom and a comfortable driving position - important given that I'm 6' 4". I'll be changing my specs from BSM to AW, and will add the premium package,... still debating convenience pack.

Any more details? Special Release of what? 1M? Haven't heard about a special release of the 1M yet.

If the car is just called "special release", the only car I could think of coming as a special release in the future, but without a name right now would be the M3 GTS Sedan:

It's for the 1M.

Thanks, but I didn't get warm fuzzies from the GM that I was actually going to get the car.

I think your dealer means the 1M is a "special release". Not that there is a special-release version of the 1M.

That would make sense, but the two the allocated were no special orders. They explained the special orders were somehow requests for more cars.

Oh well,...

Did you get a production number?

No, no production #. And the GM came out to tell me, to set my expectations - as I stated above. I'm just wondering if insiders know what the 'Special Releases' really are, for example are they just dealer requests to BMWNA which 'prove' they have buyers lined up for more allocation should they get it,.... or are they meaningless?

I suppose the truth is somewhere in between.

I don't want to start another allocation war, but I'd be interested in the BF guy's opinion.

Maybe this is an added production slot outside of the planned allocation? It was mentioned in the beginning that if the factory had an opening, then an additional 1M could be built.

I don't think so. I've had "status 047" since January when the order system opened. A production number won't be imminent until you have an allocation assigned to you.

If you were given a production date, this is assigned by BMW, not the dealer. This implies you have an allocation (big first step). People on the wait list may have the same 047 code, but lack a build date due to no allocation. Production numbers take 2 weeks to be assigned after the allocated order is placed.

When and WHERE did you order? I also have an allocated 047 with a 6/23 build date.

Implied is the key word there. Another member of this forum had a "Requested Build Date" in April. It still hasn't gone into production.

This whole procedure is entirely frustrating. The sales people at the dealership can't seem to give me a real answer. While they can read from the print out they really don't seem to know what any of it really means.

While it's good I'm on the list, the fact that I have a 'requested' build date implies the Dealer is requesting the date, rather than the factory giving the dealer the actual date. No?

I can't even tell if I'm making progress towards a car or not. Aaargh. Time to start calling up the chain at my dealer.

I at least want to know if I actually have an allocation or not. If I knew I had one I wouldn't mind just chillaxin' and waiting on the phone call.

They did tell me the status after 047 is 111, followed by 112. They also told me that 112 is too late to change anything. Sounds like you are on the road getting ready for actual production.

Check this thread for status order and defn. Looks like 112 should come w/ a production date too.

And a couple of posts down the thread I posted above this:

47 No quota available
57 Quota available to specify

So, my sales rep sends me a txt telling me he expects my order to "be filled in June". Don't know how to reconcile that w/a status of 047.

Just confirmed with the sales manager that I have an allocation despite the 047 status code. Also informed order would be filled in June. Looks like allocation and status code are not related. Any ideas?
