1M oil: 0-W30 or 10-W60RS ?

Could someone have a look at the BMW specified oil for the 1M???

It is an M with N54 engine, so it could be 0-30 or 10-60RS

This info is useful for all other N54 users that would eventually use 10-60RS oil

N54 and S63 doesn't use 10-60 because the engine doesn't run that hot compare to the high revving S65 or the S85. According to the head of engineering in M (there's a post somewhere when he talked about the M5), the worried about heat is it breaks down the oil and no longer behave what it intended to be.

Now, there might be other consideration why you might want to run 10W60, but it has been written to death in many places .

Dack will chime in right now and said, as long as it is BMW LL-01 OR LL-04 depending on where you are located.

I changed my oil recently and they used 10-60 even I asked for 5-30..because it is the "M"oil... 2 days after they re-changed cuz it is not good for our engines. One said it is due to oil pressure change within the 2 oils... Nothing to worry about lubrication is all about pressure... Thats what an "expert" told me... Now i have 5-30...

Yup! As long as the oil you are using says on the bottle "BMW Long Life 1" you are good.

Castrol Edge TWS 10w60 is NOT LL-1 rated!! So I would not use that oil. The TWS is only for M engines like the S65(e9x M3) or S85(e60 M5/M6) or S52 (older e46 M3's). For the X6M and X5M's they use the same oil that the 1M uses, namely BMW's full synthetic LL-1 rated oil(5w30 or 0w40)

Personally I think a 0w40 LL-1 rated oil makes more sense. It works at colder and hot extremes. But you can use any 0w30, 0w40, 5w30, or 5w40 oil that has BMW's LL-1 rating.

Don't worry about the other planet face, we all have it all the time. In fact they are from another planet called the Dealership Services, they are from a galaxy called Fishy Ways

As stated, TWS is only used in 'S' designated engines. LL01 for 1M, same as all other petrol engined bmw models. LL04 is used in diesels.

+1. ;thumbsup:

But... FYI... LL-4 is also used over here in Germany/Europe for our low sulfur (gasoline)fuels. But maybe that is going away bc Castrol has stopped making their (G.C. oil that I use) from LL-4 to LL-1 now.

I am just using their Castrol Edge FST 0w40 LL-1 (ie: German Castrol(G.C.) oil and change it every few months or 5K kms - which ever comes first.
