Questions for ED Pickup

Hi y'all,

I'm supposed to pick up my car in just under four weeks and I have a few questions that I hope anybody could answer for me as this is my first ED. They probably won't all come to me right now and I figure anybody else can ask questions too since this will be a popular ED car. (I know there is an ED section but most are relatively specific to the 1M so I figured here was best.)

1) What do you have to do to keep the plates? I saw that WLKSFTLY left some sort of note in his car at drop-off. Do you get this note at drop-off or ahead of time?

2) How long does the drop-off process take? I want to try to catch my flight the same day and would like to plan accordingly.

3) Has anyone heard if they'll offer a voucher from BMWNA for the first service if you get it done in Europe? i.e. You pay upfront and then BMWNA will give you a credit or pay you back for this first service? I know they did this with the M3's.

4) Does the first service just include an oil change and look over of the brakes or does it also include a LSD fluid change as well?

These are all that comes to mind now and I thank everyone for their help ahead of time. If anyone else needs to post similar questions feel free.

I dropped mine at the port at Bremerhaven. Finding the correct location took forever, but once I found it, the actual process took about an hour or so, IIRC. Getting your plates is a crapshoot - I didn't leave a note, but mine arrived anyway. Others aren't so lucky.

BTW: You can't leave ANYTHING in the car that didn't come from the factory - not even options you happen to install in Germany. They'll be disposed of.

1. Plates can stay on the car (I did 3 ED in last 4 years)
2. Two hours max
3. No service needed if you are not driving the car. (You can pay them 50 euro’s and they can drop off the car for you)
4. The only thing you should take with you is First aid kit and triangle. If you don’t they will disappear in transport

Regarding the plates, you can take the front plate with you, but the rear plate has to stay on the car (the plate signifies that the car is for export). The rear plate should still be on the car when it is redelivered to you, unless the VPC or your dealer decides to take it off for some reason.

1) The drop off in Munich has copies of the document that asks to leave the plates and any toll stickers with the car. I believe there's a PDF on the ED wiki that you can print ahead of time but you need to leave both plates on the car.
Ok, found it - http://www.bimmerfest.com/wiki/index...ng_for_Pick_Up (look under "What to pack")
Both of my plates were in the trunk and the Austrian toll sticker on the windshield when I took re-delivery at the Performance Center.

2) Maybe 45 minutes (again, in Munich) and this included some small talk with the staff. You can call ahead and make an appointment.

Tip: try to arrive a day before your delivery so you can get a night of sleep. I wish I had done that but next time will be different.

Enjoy!

Thanks for the responses guys I appreciate it. In regards to the service I probably wasn't clear. I plan on driving a bit while over there and would like to know what the first service requires. I believe its required at about 1000-1200 mls.

I believe the first service does include the Diff. In speaking with MNavigator, he had difficulty finding a dealer with all the stuff required to do the service there, they weren't prepared.

I asked if I could take one plate with me, and left a note in the car for the rear one.

I left the triangles and first aid kit!!! Fingers crossed they make it back....

I have read over on the M3 forum that you can pay to have the first service done (for an M3 it is a oil change, trans and diff fluid change). But finding a dealer that stocks all the correct fluids will be a challange. Once you decide on where to have this done - I would stop by a few days before and make sure the dealer stocks the correct parts. Most dealers do not stock the trans or diff oil.

I think someone has said that the BMW Zentrum in Munich stocks these fluids. I think it is the dealer that is south of the city(Munich has three or four (factory)dealers). I would call ahead. And even then still contact them before you need the service done - when you are there.

Also... this service is not cheap. Most posts I have read on the M3 forum say they spend about 500 euros for this first service. Then when you get back to the states - BMW NA will reimburse you. But many say it is hard to find someone at BMW NA who knows about this program - and it took them about six months to get reimbursed.

Also... you say you will drive more than 1,200 miles over here... you do know that the export tags are only good for two weeks over here. Over two weeks you must make special arrangements (and pay for extra insurance) for a longer stay.

Thanks for the feedback Dackel I appreciate it. And yes I know the insurance is only good for two weeks. I only plan to drive it for about six days. I don't get over there much and want to see as much as possible. Also refering to the service do you think a dealer in Monaco would be able to do it for me? I'd assume they see a lot more M cars there. I am awaiting a reply from them as I have contacted them already.

ANY BMW dealer can do this first serice. It just might be a lot more in Monaco! You know what a small bottle of Coke sells for in Monaco? 15 euros! At least so I am told. Never been there.

Engine oil rns about 23 euros at most dealers. Not sure how much you need for the 1M(probably 7L ?). The manual trans oil runs about 140 euros for a 5L jug. Oil filter is about 11 euros and the rear diff oil runs about 60 euros (you need less than 1.5L, and its sold in 0.5L bottles). Then figure about an hours labor or so at 110 euros (over here in DE). Maybe in Monoca their labor is twice as much? Make sure they have all the oil - esp the tranny oil (MTF-LT-3 or -4 ??? ) and the diff oil is Castrol SAF-XJ, I believe. BUT ask the dealer who will work on your car about the correct oils.

Also... IF you drive from Stuttgart thru France and down to Monaco... I hear the French toll roads are $$$. A friend of mine drove that way once back when it was D-Marks and he said one small 100 km section cost him 100D-Marks (50 euros now). I am sure it is more now. I know down in Italy their toll roads prices change depending on rush hour times.

As far as racking up the Kms on the Autobahn... I would say plan to drive only about 200 km per day. I know it doesn't sound like much... but IF you aren't use to drivng at high speeds over here... anything further than 200 or 300 km per day and your mind will be mush at the end of each day. Drive slow at first and have fun. I would just stick to the back roads at first. Any BundesStrasse (B-road) is perfect for breaking in the engine. Lots of stops and starts and never any constant speeds.

sq86,

A work of advice I learned from the locals. The time to enjoy the autobahn as you would like is Sunday morning. There are no trucks on Sundays and the trafic is very light in the morning. I followed that advice and had a drive I will never forget.

Enjoy.

Thanks for the info Dackel it is very helpful. I was planning on sticking to backroads for the first day or two to do exactly that, break it in. I don't want to be doing any highspeed blasts down the autobahn on the first day because there goes the turbos and gasket much sooner down the road lol. Also that is an interesting tidbit about the French toll roads.

I like 1addicts better but the ED information at bimmerfest seems more plentifull to me - more active participants with lots of experience. Here is a link:

http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=25

I remember discussion of service in Europe but not the specifics. It is probably worth a search to see what you can find.

The pictures alone are worth visiting the bimmerfest ED site for. Some of the trips over the passes look amazing.

I'm still obssessed whether the euro plate will be drilled (rather than taped) to the front bumper, hoping not!

I definitely took one of my 2 plates home in my suitcase-and the other was in the trunk when I picked it up for Performance delivery.

You're gonna love it!

+1

Just take the front plate with you, the rear plate must remain with the car.

No need to leave a note in the car.

In 07 when I ED'ed my 335i they Drilled holes in the front bumper, which I keep my ED plate on today. I understand they use double sided tape now for the front plate.

Enjoy your ED it's the only way to fly!

SQ86,

I'll try to help you out. On my trip we did just under 2400 miles and they were a lot of fun.

1. Plates, I was told to leave mine on, the front is attached with 2 sided tape the rear with regular mounting. My car should be at the dealer any day so I will let you know if they are still on the car when it gets there. When I dropped off my car they had the papers to put in it about leaving the plate but I just put the ones I had printed instead.

2) The whole process took me about 30 minutes, but they were taking their time as I wasn't in a rush and there was no one else there. Make sure to have all of your documentation that you get from the Welt and you will be fine. One thing to note was be careful what time you go drop off the car, I didn't think to add time as it was the day before a long weekend and there was quite a bit of traffic.

3) I am submitting my service invoice to my dealer, he has offered to look into my reimbursement for the service.

4) According to the factory service schedule (France) that the dealer was nice enough to print for me the first service is at 1200 miles and consists of the engine oil and filter being changed and the rear diff fluid. I am not sure if it will vary in the US and Canada as the rest of the intervals seem way to far apart. I am also waiting to see what comes up on the dealer system here once they pull up the requirements. My service cost me $307 Euros thats $437 US dollars.

Now for more good info

Make sure you find a dealer before hand and call them to let them know you want a service done. My experience on booking at the dealer in Marseille France wasn't good. Although I called them the week before and let them know exactly what I was bringing in they didn't bother ordering the M oil. I found out the hard way when we got there the morning of the appointment that they thought I didnt know what I was driving as the "1M were not available". In the hunt for another dealer to do the service, one was booked for 3 weeks and wouldn't make the exception to take us in. Resulting in us having the service done at BMW Bavaria Concept near Lille in northern France. They were very good.

How do you plan on going from the Airport to BMW Welt? My suggestion is to contact Rolf, he is a young man in his 70's who used to work at BMW. His knowledge will really help you get around Munich and the Welt. He was waiting for us as we exited the airport, took us to a quiet place and sat with us for 10 minutes showing us the different areas of Munich before we left for the Welt. He showed us the different places for items that you may or may not need and was willing to explain how the traffic system and road signs worked. The experience was absolutely fantastic and worth every penny. Email him for the cost but it would have been less then a taxi and not much more then taking the train/subway if you are more then one person. His email addy is rolf.raffelsieper@yahoo.de
