Honest Evaluation: Bilstein B8 worth the $$$ ?
I am torn on this right now. I have been running HR springs on my xdrive e90 for a year now. The ride is harsh but the look and handling is definitely worth it IMO.
I am going to a set of Eibachs on Tuesday because I do not like the rear drop on the HR's for my wheel and tire set up. I will be running 18s vmr v710 with non rflt tires staggered. I only have 11k miles on my stock shocks. Is the increased handling, smoothness, ride quality that much better with the B8's, or should I save my money? TIA |

Well from what I understand, and I'm no expert, is that with the right shock to accommodate the stiffer spring you will have less bounce. The reason behind this, is that a stiffer spring on the softer stock shock will overpower it's dampening ability and the car will bounce more when going over bumps. Not to mention the fact that the springs are shorter so in theory the shocks should be living closer to the bump stops. That being said with the stiffer shock you will have a less bouncier ride (ie smoother) but the stiffness should be the same. The only way to correct stiffness is by changing the spring.
So is it worth it? In my opinion yes that's why I just bought bilstein sport shocks to pair with my H&R springs. In my mind at least I would never run my car with after market springs alone. Some people will disagree and say it's perfectly fine. But the ride quality and handling characteristics of the vehicle will be better with properly mated parts. Also, there is the added benefit of being sure you won't blow your shocks on the stiffer springs (which may not happen! as some may point out), which if they do you will really be in for a bouncy ride lol. Oh, and I forgot to say that I remember reading that eibach's are softer than H&R's so maybe they will come out smoother and give an easier time on the shocks. hope this helps |

I've been running my H&R Sports on stock shocks for about 6 months now and just ordered the Bilstein sport shocks. I think it will be a welcome improvement

bilsteins have always been known to give you a stiffer ride. Thats a good thing though when it comes to handling. I had them on my previous car and the difference was night and day. Your handling will absolutely be ten times better. They run as smooth as a cloud, but you will feel every bump on the road, Sport does not = comfort.

I live in New Jersey and the roads suck here and I think the Bilsteins feel great. They thud when you hit a pothole but they don't make you feel like your driving a 87 IrocZ like the stock setup did.
