Custom Detector Installation, consultation this Sat.
Hey guys,
Ever since i've moved here, i've been scared shitless of all the cops on the highways, etc. And ever since i've gotten the procede, ive had the tendency to hit the highway onramps at about 80+mph (in reality, thats the best place to speed, no? curvy, empty from cars (usually), and cops dont really patroll those?) Anyway, this saturday, there is a very expirienced detector installed who works at the Tweeter in Bowie, MD. I talked to him about doing a custom V1 install in which the detector is completely taken apart, the front and rear sensors are mounted in the front/rear of the vehicle and then wires are run from them back to the central unit. The unit can be placed anywhere, probably glovebox...im not sure yet, and then i will have the stealth display in my ashtray. He said the install would be about 500-700, depending on what he sees when he examines my car. He noted that he has never done this to a e92, but has assured me of other fine cars that he has done this too. I might ask for references when i see him on saturday. Anyway, just wanted to let you guys know about this "stealth" install, and that maybe if anyone wants to get it done aswell, we can set up a little bit of a discount, maybe...although i would have to talk to him. Hopefully, i will have this done before the next meet, and you guys will be able to check it out.

I'd be interested to see how that works out. I can't stand the aggressive speed patrolling around here, too.

Yeah, im reading alot of information about V1 stuff on radardetectors.net. Also thinking about a Laser Jammer aswell, for complete protection, especially if i decide to mount the V1 in the rear of the vehicle...etc.

Stephan, what about radar detectors detectors? Its a liability in VA and DC (not that you can speed in DC), unless you're planning to just use the detector for your high speed jaunts in Maryland and beyond.

From what i've read about the V-1 the new versions are undetectable to K-2 something or other detectors...

Now my question in regards to those detector is how do they stop cops from actually seeing you speeding. It might blind their speed detectors, but it's not going to stop them from seeing you and deciding to follow you and give you a ticket. At least around here, Bethesda, Rockville, Chevy Chase, Silver Spring, Gaithersburg, Germantown, cops are not standing still with the lasers pointed, they are in their cars driving or outside of them just standing and looking at who is speeding.

I have seen them patrol ramps from time to time on I-95.
I saw them a few times on exit 33 (Laurel). scared the hell out of me. I was doing like 90 to get on I-95 but they had already stopped someone. I got lucky that time.

I would recommend to complete your radar detector with a UNIDEN Bearcat BCT15 scanner (about $250). It alerts you when you’re within 3 miles of an active Highway Patrol car.
You will hear: “Holy macaroni, I just clocked a Sparkling Graphite Metallic Bimmer at 90!” |

90?......i think i park faster than that. Edit: I've looked at the unit, its pretty interesting, but im assuming i would have to drive with that thing on listening to the Law talk about anything and everything....seems to be a pretty involved way of detecting law enforcement, but at the same time, probably the best way...

This is Charlie-Alpha 22, I'm in pursuit of a Sparkling Graphite, e92 335, doing approx. 120. The perp. is roughly 20-25 years of age, caucasian, and he looks dangerous...wait...yup, he appears to be smoking a cigarette and giving me the finger...though with that borderline illegal tint, I'm not sure...
Please send back-up, his car is SO CLEAN that I think he might be dangerous...

Hahahahaa.....im laughing out loud at work, people are wondering about me at this point....
Yeah, i havent mentioned it enough. I actually parked and smoked a cigarette (of course) and just STARED at my car, my Girlfriend came downstairs and saw it, and was like "Holy Shit, what the hell did you do" It was at night, and there was a huge yellow floodlight in the croner of a building, all the surfaces were soooo shiny and deep, it was magical.

I was attempting to protect your reputation ! The scanner is annoying: I prefer to listen to classical music on Sirius. I had one in a truck, and not only it is legal here in VA, but it is a very efficient tool. It came preprogrammed with each State’s Police frequency, so you just have to switch State on the scanner as you cross State lines. |

Its not worth the money or the troubles it will bring. I only put up my radar detector when im outside of VA.
When on the highways, I definitley use the brakelight method (no matter where I am). If I see a few cars randomly hit the brakes at the same point in the road, I will slow down to a reasonable speed (maybe only 5-10 over at most)... I really think that VA employs too many speed trappers. Its like they have nothing better to do but be out there 'fundraising.' Just MHO... |

VA funds all those road projects and state-owned land projects through fines and moving violations. I found this out when I had to go to court over my 103 in a 55 zone back in 1999. My lawyer did a terrible job and I actually had my license susspended and had to go through classes and driving to work with a restricted permit...it sucked. At the time I HAD a radar dectector, but it did not save me. Since then I have not used one, and just decided to drive a bit slower/safer. I save my speeding for back-roads and settings where I know the Cops patterns and hang-outs. This state is such a cluster-f*ck when it comes to speeding...to contrast, a few months before I got my big ticket in '99 I was pulled over just south of Baltimore on I-95 by a MD State cop who was more interested in my car mods than giving me a ticket for going over 90mph...but I've driven though Fairfax and gotten a tickets going 32 in a 25...!! Go figure.

A big reason why V1 customers pay the big price is because the company provides free upgrades. Technology keeps advancing every few years so it will only be a matter of time before the disassembled V1 becomes obsolete.
The shop owner where we had the DC dyno for the Proceed installs talked about doing a mount on the rear windshield and inserting the remote display in the ashtray. The rear windshield would have to be pre-tinted to help hide the V1 and mount though. He insisted that the hardwire setup would be difficult to spot and labor would be $200-300 range. |
