Grinding noise after shut off??

Hey guys. I bought a cpo's 08' 335xi in March of this year. So far i love the car and have had no complaints. The only mods ive done are wheels tires and springs. I havent even touched the engine. The car has 38k miles on it, and after seeing the carfax i know it hasnt had any major issues at all. Now all of a sudden i am noticing this horrible grinding noise coming from below the car after i shut it off. The car starts fine and everything. I can also hear a slight scratching when i give it some gas at idle. Has anyone had any experience with this issue before. None of my engine lights are showing, although it does say it needs service next month. Please help. This grinding noise is very loud and noticeable.

Thanks,
Matt

Post a video from your phone.

If no codes are being thrown use Chevron Techron fuel injector cleaner (concentrate). It solves rpm fluctuating upon cold start-up. Also, for most BMW problems start off by scanning your car with the Peake Research Tool. It contains the actual BMW codes. If you want to register a newly installed battery for free (just buy a $10 cable) and google/download BMWLogger

I just started having the same grinding noise under the car at shut off. Sometimes it also produces an extra sound like a loud clapping from the back of the car. Any thoughts?

Could be the transfer case motor/solenoid that XI owners report failing. I had a problem that I talked to a BMW tech about and he asked if I was hearing the same sounds you are describing. Thankfully I don't have that issue but I bet that's what you have. Since you're CPO, take it in and tell them you think it's that part.

The starter bendix may not be retracting all the way.
