House Clearance Ideas
Has anyone had any experience putting the contents of a house through an auction house? Stuff like furniture, kitchen goods and general household items?
I guess these house clearance guys are a rip off or are they worth getting round? Balls: Sorry mods please move to off topic...... |

There was one of these auction houses local to me in my last place.
The fees involved were high enough, but sale prices were also low making it harsh on the seller. I guess it will depend on the area though. |

I'd be interested in answers to this too. I have a relative who's now gone into a care home and we have to sell the house to pay for it (!!!!!!). After removing all the 'personal' stuff I just need the house empty.

I've done this on Gumtree for a deceased relative.
Put an advert up, explain whats going on, and that on XX date the house will be open to all, everything must go. You'll have students and people on low wages screaming through the door to try and grab cheap furniture etc |

I'd do eBay and pay someone to do it!!! Do you know of any students/unemployed folk who have time on their hands??? Bung them a bit of cash, they'll do the photos, uploading, text, and sort out the sale end of things. That's if you know someone .
Bleedin' hell, if you were more local, I'd get my missus to do it whilst the little one is at pre-school - she'll do anything for a new handbag (er, well not quite everything ). What's the story Marcus or is there a super-injunction on you .

Do a 'Garage' sale.
Stick some adverts up locally/local free papers and set a w/end aside and have an 'open' day. The locals love to think there getting a bargain, you could also get rid of unwanted stuff from your other house. Put the event on Facebook, call it a party and EVERYTHING will go, you won't necessarily get any money though

Recently cleared my late father's house.
The family had what they wanted, and the rest went to the sale room. Sale rooms organised everything and sent us a cheque a month or so later. They organised clearance, quoted £85 per hour - the haulage firm were there most of the day, including 2 trips to the sale room, cost us about £150 iirc (!!) Usual auction room fees (that vary from auction house to auction house). Most of the stuff was saleable, but we were warned not to send "junk" as they would charge to take it to the tip, and this would be expensive as they have to pay for a tipping licence. To call the haulage firm "gyppo's" is perhaps unkind and stereotypical, but they were knowledgable on what to send and what wouldn't sell, so obviously they were "regulars" with the (large) auction house. We packed up as much as we could in boxes etc, as the auction house said that the haulage firm would pack it up, but charge for the (expensive) time. There are house clearance firms that may clear your house for nowt - depends on what you have got left I suppose Electrical goods will need PAT testing, so that may cost more than they will bring in. Freecycle is great for getting rid of stuff for free. We had people clamouring for beds and furniture (all 1970's vintage although in good condition), and they cart the stuff away.
