Out of Warranty - HPFP died - quick question
With the HPFP dead, I need to bring my 335i to the dealer 100 miles away in LIMP MODE. Since I'm out of warranty, calling a flatbed is out of the question because it would cost me $500.
Here's the question: 1) would it help if I fill up the car with a full tank of gas before my long journey? I heard that having a full tank helps because it keeps the pressure balanced. True? I need all the help I can get to make this journey as smooth as possible since the car is in limp! 2) Also, I notice that the engine fan gets extremely loud, like it's working at max speed. Is this normal for the limp mode? Last edited by JunkStory; 06-12-2011 at 05:16 AM.. |

HPFP warranty is 10 years, 100K miles. Call the dealer and see if they will cover the cost of getting it there if it is a HPFP failure.

Unfortunately, in Canada, they haven't extended the warranty of the HPFP They did do a recall for the HPFP though, but to be honest I am not 100% sure if it is the HPFP failing at all (probably 70-80% certain only). I get crazy RPM jumping around, half engine light, but no long cranks at all.

Not sure about the great White North, but most insurance policies include reimbursement for towing. Check your policy.
And for those who don't have this on their policy, get it, it costs maybe $10 more a year. |

They have the 120000km warranty in Canada. My car went in for device and they changed the HPFP, even though it didn't break down yet.

Thanks all for the replies, great to know Canada actually extended the warranty in Canada! However, I am not 100% sure if the issue is the HPFP failure at all, if it turns out to be something else BMW will charge me for the towing fee! My OBD is giving me no error codes at all.
HPFP = High Probability Failure Pump I don't mind driving there in limp mode, I will start my journey 6:00am in the morning with no other car on the road. So if it turns out to be the HPFP, does having a full tank of gas help the pump? |

To OP. Tow the car in. Fuel wont help. You have low fuel pressure. Your max speed will be 20-30mph depending on drivetrain. Figure 100 miles to be 3-5 hours travel. If you can't pass 30mph its your fuel pump. If your car burns a ton of gasoline its the injectors. Both are covered in the recall. Therefore your travel to the dealer by flatbed should be too. Call the service center to confirm this tho. |

If you have contacted your insurance company and there is no deductible for towing, I would look into the ACA membership? I guess it is like AAA here in the US. (http://www.ama.ab.ca) I don't think it would be good to drive your car as it is right now. If it ends up being something else than the HPFP, you may damage your car even more. It's your gamble......

I just took mine in with similar symptoms (bouncing RPMs, SES light, no long cranks) and they replaced the HPFP and 1 injector. I'm out of warranty as well and it cost me $0.

Thanks all for your responses. Shortly after ignition, the RPM drops so low the engine shuts down itself. I will definitely need to have it towed now.
Do all the BMW dealers offer their own flatbed towing service? I really don't want my 335i towed on two wheels. I also do not have the Roadside Assistance in my car.. I will have to call the dealer directly. Last edited by JunkStory; 06-13-2011 at 05:14 PM.. |

Indeed it was the HPFP failure. My dealer (Canada) took care of the problem at no cost under the extended warranty for the HPFP @ 10 years / 200,000km.
However, I'm still left with the $190 tow bill, which I hope I can get reimbursed by BMW Canada. Any tips or suggestions for going this route? Should I just send them a letter with the receipts and a letter explaining? |
