335i Engine chattering sound on cold start

When i start it up for the first time in the day, and i sit there and let it idle for a few minutes, i noticed a slight faint chattering or shuddering/clunking sound coming from the engine area. car has 1k miles on it

brand new 2011 335i e90 nov2010 build

i did a search but i found sounds regarding wastegate rattles...i have no idea if this is the same thing or not. some have described it as cans under the hood but im not sure if that is what im hearing

i never noticed it before because im usually in the car and i drive off but last night i had to rearrange cars around in my garage so i had it idling there while i was moving the other cars around and noticed the sound.

is this normal? or am i sitting on a potential problem? thanks for input

This happens to me from time to time upon a cold start but it goes away once the temps are up.

I have this same problem now that my car got serviced for a recall. Ever since I got a new HPFP, injectors, and software upgrade, my car shakes for about 15-20 seconds upon startup.

My old N54 consistently did this. I believe it was related to the lifters. Myself and the OP now have the N55 which makes a slightly different sound than the N54.

I have a 335is and mine does it too but not always.

Its normal. Just the sound of the DI

Yup... we have the same car (build date 4/11; 800 miles only). Questioned that myself during start up but goes away after a minute or two. I'm assuming it's just the sound coz of the turbo?? My old E46 didn't make any sounds like that.

mine does the same, I keep the revs up to about 1500rpm for 10 secs and its gone.

Ok so to update, I've tried listening for this sound on Cars with the n55 engine and all of them do it. My 335i loaner did it, and also I just heard it on my 535i.

Ive no choice but to view it as normal. Curious what it is tho. Does disappear after warming up

I actually asked about this today at the service dept. He said it is the waste gates on the turbos. Once the engines warm up it goes away. If it doesn't, then something may be wrong.

The injection cycle is different for the first 60-90 seconds on cold start. Some people may hear wastegate rattle, but they all have a different, rattle-like sound to the engine on cold start. This is normal. Once the catalytic converters are up to temp, the noise goes away because the fuel injection cycle changes to a normal running status.
