7 week wait is over and now...

I just picked up my e90 335i last Friday after 7 weeks of waiting for it to come in. I had thought that wait was painful, but I think keeping the RPMs below 4000 for 1200 miles during the engine break in period might be even more painful.

That said, do you guys really think the break in period matters? How many have really adhered to it and in doing so, does it make a difference relative to engine issues down the road?

I'm no BMW engineer, but from reading the manual, it seemed that the suggested easy break in was more for all the other mechanical components like the differential rather than the engine itself. I had a friend who wripped the shit out of his RSX Type S straight out of the dealer parking lot. His ran faster than every other RSX he raced. Some say it's better to run it moderately hard the first 20 miles. Then drive how u feel like right after that. I gradually pushed mine on the highway. By 50 miles I ran it full throttle. Just make sure your temperature is close to the middle mark first. It takes a while for it to get there believe me. Much longer than other cars because I think it measures oil temp and not coolant temp.

No harm to break in a new car properly.

Doesn't BMW check every car before shipping out from factory? And I thought one of the inspection is to test the engine or something which they basically apply full (or close to) throttle?

Correct me if im wrong tho.

engines are tested across the rpm range including full throttle. but other components of the cars are not from the transmission to the brakes. The break-in allows these things to get worn into each other.

one more thing about break-ins are that 1200 isnt some magic # that all of a sudden you can rev to redline but not at 1199. its a gradual process. so when you get to maybe 500 or 600 you can rev at a bit higher limit, then 900 a bit higher, etc.
