Is the 1 series the new "3"?

With the F10 5 series looking more like a 7, and the F30 3 series now looking more like a 5 ... does that make the F20 1 series the new 3? Bringing back the real 3 series compact-sport-luxury-sedan-rocket spirit, which BMW has always envisioned it to be?

I thought there was a post on here saying the 1 series will become FWD, 3-series coupe will be the 4-series, and 3-series sedan will stay the same

the new 1 series is bigger than the 3 series from the last generation, but they are in a different class quality wise.

If they are definitely changing up the model/series naming, they should make the 3 series the coupe and the 4 series the sedan. Makes more sense that way since the larger number has always represented a larger model. Instead of just copying Audi, who has it wrong IMO, they should do the more sensible.

IMO the new M5 looked more like a 4 door E92 than a 7-series.

If the 1 looked better and came in a sedan, I think many of us would be driving it. BMW probably makes it look cheap as to not cannibalize 3-series sales.

As much fun as it seems (and with impressive numbers to back it up), I still can't get over the fact that the current gen 1-series is fugly, and is always called cute. It's a chicks car!

I really hope they switch the 1 over to FWD. That should give the 3-series it's niche back. It's their bread and butter. Don't mess with it. That's Audis job.
