Fender bender damage, file an insurance claim?
What's up everybody. I'm new to the forums, a proud owner of an '07 Space Grey 335i 6MT.
Anyway, I parked my car on the street in SF over the past weekend and came back to find this. I'm guessing some idiot tried parallel parking and bumped my car. The paint is obviously cracked and the bumper is somewhat pushed in and misaligned. Should I call my insurance and file a claim for this? $500 deductible. The damage looks like it's gonna cost more than that so I think I should. What do you guys think? |

From what i understand, paint shouldn't peel or crack like that. I'm guessing that the bumper's been repainted (to a lower quality) before. Then again, I'm no expert.

I would file a claim. Your insurance shouldn't go up because of that.

No, I'd have to disagree based on the pictures. My rear was hit also, and it looks nearly identical to the OP's. I took delivery of my car with 6 miles so I don't think there was a repaint. . FYI to the OP, I got $900 from the dumb chick's insurance company who hit me, so yes I would file a claim. Your damage is more extensive than mine, so probably even more.

If you know who hit you, I'd file a claim.
Get a flashlight and look real close at the impact marks, and look for "spider webbing" in the paint indicating stress cracks. This can even cause it to peel away in some cases. Otherwise, bumper cover + paint + labor will be roughly $975. Is the trunk lid damaged? If so, that'll be more.

Just remember if you file a claim, it could potential show up on carfax thus lowering the value of your car when you go to sell it or trade it in.

You are assuming that it was a tap. You don't know how hard they hit you. The bumper shocks might be pressed in. You need to have it checked out.

If no codes are being thrown use Chevron Techron fuel injector cleaner (concentrate). It solves rpm fluctuating upon cold start-up. Also, for most BMW problems start off by scanning your car with the Peake Research Tool. It contains the actual BMW codes. If you want to register a newly installed battery for free (just buy a $10 cable) and google/download BMWLogger
