07 335I new crank shaft and rod bearings
Just wanted to let everyone know about my experience recently. I bought the car with 38k miles. At 43K I noticed a grinding noise coming from the engine, I took it to the dealer. That afternoon they called back to say the #5 rod bearing was bad and needed to replace the crank shaft. I have no idea what the car had been through prior. I had only taken it to one track event at VIR. BMW replaced the crank shaft and bearings but still would not install an OEM oil cooler. As I was the 2nd owner, I would have to pay full price. After some negotiation with the dealer, I am having the cooler installed. They are providing the labor and I am providing parts.

Is this car under warranty? Also, they denied the repair because you are the second owner? If it is under warranty, I don't see why they would deny it. I bought mine from the original owner and had the dealer replace some things with no problem.

Yes the car is under warranty. I bought it CPO. However, the car didn't come with a factory oil cooler. BMW NA refused to assist in the oil cooler as I was the 2nd owner. The dealer is offering some assistance on the oil cooler with labor. The crank shaft and rod bearings were replaced under warranty.
The scary part about all of it was the fact the service mechanic didn't give me the warm and fuzzy's. He said in not so many words, I wouldn't keep this car past the warranty period. Thankfully, I have 56k left on that. I may have assumed wrongly but it was my thoughts that during the track event the oil temps were high which may have contributed to the bad bearing. It never went into limp mode but got my attention. That is when I started searching the site for oil cooler problems. The Service Advisor only said that the #5 rod bearing was bad and couldn't be sure where that came from other than just a bad bearing. Last edited by ncrzrbk; 06-17-2011 at 02:15 PM.. |

Yeah I wouldn't be happy to hear that. At least you have the CPO warranty. Enjoy it!

noise
It was a grinding noise in the lower end of the motor. I first thought it was the exhaust but turned out to be the bearings. I traded the car after getting it fixed for another BMW.
