Check this thread. It's a very common issue, probably that same thing you are experiencing.

If your under warranty then its all good. If not, that sucks... But its not that big of a problem so don't sweat it unless it sounds like a semi truck lol.

You under warranty so your good to go.
It's going to go something like this. 1st they will replace the lifters 2nd if that doesn't fix it (and it won't) then they will replace the head next. The dealer can be a dick about this and state that he won't do any work unless his service people can recreate the noise. Lucky for me my SA knew that this is a known issue and had me taken care of. |

I went to have the dealer look at mine, but they could never "replicate" the ticking. It still happens occasionally, but now I am out of warranty. So I guess oh well..

Take a video/sound clip of the noise.....they won't give you a hard time if you provide proof.

1. get a local paper with the date clearly visible. 2. pop the hood when you hear the ticking 3. use your phone to do a video recording. 4. start with your license plate and work your way to the engine. 5. place the newspaper on your ticking engine and record the date. Yeah I know this sounds like your doing a kidnapping but this way you have iron clad proof and even the biggest asshole of a dealer will have to accept it. |

Have any of you had this issue fixed after the warranty? I have brought it up to the dealer before, but nothing was done. Would they cover this as a courtesy or am I most likely going to pay?

I got mine covered under CPO if that's what you're asking. But if you get it done out of warranty, go straight to the new head replacement. Replacing the valve lifters on the exhaust side is a waste of time/money.

even if you're out of warranty , I would take it to the dealer and see what they can do for you.
lifters are about $450.00 job. hopefully it fixes the problem. I had lifters replaced at 27000 and it was fine until 42000 miles. and at 42000 miles dealer replaced the head under warranty.(car was out of warranty by 42000) engine sound was completly different in a better way. good luck |

Depending on how many miles you are over you can always ask your dealer AND BMWNA for a "good will" repair. It doesn't hurt to ask.

If no codes are being thrown use Chevron Techron fuel injector cleaner (concentrate). It solves rpm fluctuating upon cold start-up. Also, for most BMW problems start off by scanning your car with the Peake Research Tool. It contains the actual BMW codes. If you want to register a newly installed battery for free (just buy a $10 cable) and google/download BMWLogger

I work closely with a service manager and it seems as if BMWNA requires the lifters to be replaced first. They won't replace the lifters and head at the first shot. Like I said 3,000 miles ago my lifters were changed and I'm pretty much waiting for the noise to come back. I'll be out of the maintenance warranty by then probably, but I'm sure the CPO will cover it (+ the small deductible). I know it's about money, but it's annoying how BMWNA has techs doing circles before the actual fix. We spent good money on these cars just fix it the first time!

I only used Shell V-Power and Sunoco 93 and still had the tick. The deffect is in the lifter and head design and has nothing to do with the fuel being used. BMW is well aware of this problem.

Here's what I recommend: 1. Study the thread: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13504. (It's long but very informative) 2. Take the car to the dealer and let them know you've studied up on the subject. (Act like you really know what you're talking about.) 3. Demand action!...but be polite. They'll want to first replace the lifters...and, more than likely, the noise will continue. After that, take it back with the expectation that they'll replace the head. Changing the head is the only real fix. Pain in the a$$, but it works. Best of luck! |
