Weird V1 hardwire problems

So my buddy hardwired my V1 this weekend...he's done it on a few different E9Xes, double checked the DIY just to be safe, figured there would be no problems tapping wires in the overhead console...wrong.

Here's what happens. When the sunroof is closed, tilted, or opened slightly (roughly 2 inches max), the V1 receives power, no problem. But if I go to open the sunroof all the way, once it gets past that two inch point, the power to the V1 starts to flicker off and on, with the flickering getting more and more rapid until it's just making clicking noises, then no power at all by the time it's opened about halfway. And yes...it just stays dead if the sunroof is open. The same thing happens in reverse when I close it...clicking noises, flickering off and on, then full power comes back right before the sunroof is fully closed.

He tried tapping both green wires up there (one is power for the sunroof, the other is for lighting IIRC), and the problem is the same regardless which wire is tapped. He also checked the connections while it was opening and closing to make sure that nothing was tugging at the connection to make it behave this way, and found nothing.

Anyone have any insight? I am happy that my V1 is hardwired and working when my sunroof is closed or tilted, but I'd like it to work all the time, and I would prefer not having to run a line to the fuse box for this, considering everyone else doesn't seem to have problems running it this way, whether E9X or not. Help is much appreciated...

Power's not the problem, your ground is. What bolt did he ground to?

Probably grounded to the screw near the sunroof motor. Drill a hole in the roof subframe like I did. Much better ground.

Why didn't you just tap the fuse box? It's so much easier.

I agree, your making much more difficult. Just get a "add a fuse" at probaly any auto parts store, and go directly into fuse box.

Thanks all for the help. I will try a new ground first, then go for the fuse box.
