Help Please - crank pulley / harmonic balancer
Hope all is well. I have had great luck in the past asking for help on this great board. Unfortunatly I need help again.
My 07 328i has 62k miles and has a low rpm shake. I notice shake when cold and warm, with A/C on and off. I do not feel it at all when driving, only notice rough idle / shake when in park. While driving I feel it when I am at a stop with my foot on the brake. It also shakes the seat. Other than that seems to drive fine. At first I thought it maybe a vacuum leak of some sort (maybe it is). Also after looking around the engine. I believe the crank pulley / harmonic balancer (guessing that is what it is) looks like it is falling apart. The rubber seal is missing and sticking out. Could this be causing the shake? Thanks for your help. |

Hi,
Whether this is the problem or not, the harmonic balancer does not look healthy. Are you the original owner and/or do you know the history of the car? Usually, you would feel vibration at all RPM's since the balance is off. In fact, it should get worse at higher RPM. When driving, with all the other vibrations, you may not feel it but try raising the RPM when parked and see if the level of vibration is proportional to RPM. It could also be bad engine mounts but I would have that balancer checked out. Regards. |

For more info Healey3000, I am 2nd owner. Bought as CPO when the car had 35k miles. I believe I have all the service records from the dealer, nothing repaired in that area. I also had tick fixed with new lifters and cylinder head.
CobraMarty - I wish I knew if you were being sarcastic or not, hah Thanks for the reply. |

No really, I'll buy it. I have a plan for it, I want to have a custom one buiilt but I need a core sample. I have a '06 balancer but it is slightly different size.

My wifes 1999 Mercedes 500sl had that happen. Found out there was a factory campaign on the part for lifetime replacement if defective. Mercedes dealer paid for flatbed towing and said do NOT drive the car. I could only imagine the damage if that harmonic balancer became separated from the crankshaft, it would destroy the engine compartment, radiator, hood? Hope the info helps. Chris

Just found out dealer will replace crank pulley under CPO...great news.
Should I pay and get the idler and tensioner pulley replaced as well...or just wait until they start acting up? |

That's great that they will replace it! Talk nicely to the guy at the dealer. Tell him you want it as a souvenier. I'll give you $100 shipped. Please try.

Excellent news! The tensioner and idler should not need replacing this early, unless they find that something was abused in the area. Best thing would be to tell them that you suspect that the harmonic balancer damage may be a clue to other things that happened. Make sure that they inspect all parts in the area; they ought to replace those as well under the CPO warranty. Regards. |

When E90's are involved in a front end collision in many cases the harmonic balancer can get shifted from impact, causing the pulley to come apart after time. In some cases it will actually bend the crank. Good thing carfox is right 40% of the time!

kar40980 - Yeah...I took the car fax with a grain of salt. From my inspection, I'm pretty sure it wasn't in a front end collision. At times I wish it was though.
CobraMarty - I asked that the tech throw it on my floor mat or in the trunk, will continue to keep you posted |

The part has to be returned to the parts dept in order for the dealer to get paid.
