Good US price analysis/estimate

A fellow over at M3forum did a nice price analysis to predict the new M3 base price. Have a look here.

His conclusion look pretty solid to me and the range he determined is $57,250 to $59,950, which is right in line with the number most folks here have been guessing of high 50s. My bet is still for <$60k USD base.

the math seems sound. if for nothing else, i believe that bmw will stay under the 60k mark for psychological reasons. a 59k car sounds much more reasonable in the mind of a buyer than a 60k car.

Yeah I saw that post over at M3zine.com. He had a good break down and used a similar formula that I used in comparing the Euro to USD Audi RS4 pricing.

Keeping my fingers crossed that it comes in under $60K.

I would love for this estimate to be true, as long as significant performance enhancments are included in the US base.

Features such as EDC, M-driver, etc.

This appears to be it.

The US base price will be considerably less, but "How much less" is the question. Inquiring minds want to know.

I took a look at the Euro-based pricing of other BMW's, converted the Euro-price into US Dollars, then calculated the percentage difference for a handful of M models or new stateside released models seeking to identify a pattern.

Judge for yourself.

These are the numbers:
Germany Ger.Base
Base pricing converted US Dollars % of
Euros to US Dollars Base price Euro Base

335i Coupe 44650 $59,930.57 $40,800.00 68%
335 Sedan 40800 $54,762.98 $38,900.00 71%
Z4 M Coupe 57900 $77,715.12 $50,100.00 64%
M5 91600 $122,948.27 $82,900.00 67%
M6 113300 $152,074.66 $99,100.00 65%
X5 4.8L V8 68700 $92,211.20 $54,500.00 59%
X3si 3.0L I6 44000 $59,058.12 $38,000.00 64%

The percentages in the right hand column reflect the amount of original German base price that the model retains for its US base price. BMW has all base prices at set at least 29% less for its American market than its German market.
Euros to USD US price at percentage X
2007 M3 66650 $89,459.63 $59,937.95 67%
2007 M3 66650 $89,459.63 $57,254.15 64%

If BMW stays within the M models range of 64%(M Coupe) to 67% (M5) when setting the base price for M3's in the US market, the Base pricing will be in the range of $57,250 to $59,950. Of course, with the Euro as strong as it currently is vis a vis the US dollar, BMW might be tempted to go closer to the 60% number, but I doubt that BMW will do that. :banghead:

Good price analysis. Let's hope the official MSRP only stay lower to compensate gas guzzler tax.

I think it will base at $55K with no power seats and possibly no leather. The base curb weight is 3483 lbs, so I'd guess they achieved that without the weight of power seats.

Also, based upon what other members are saying about M5s not selling and depreciating rapidly, I think this car was overpriced. They don't want to make this same mistake with the M3. And considering how fast and tuneable the 335i is, they have to be careful not to price the M3 too much higher than a 335i otherwise some buyers may opt for the cheaper car and use the saved $$ to modify it to M3 levels for less $$.

Also, all the car mags are stay $54K ish.

I bet power seats are std. You can have a car like this without power seats.

Car mags and online rags have been quoting all over the map from 50-65k base. I don't think they know $hit, quite frankly.

Agree.

I'm thinking that the MSRP will be about $58K. Figure most of the popular options will be pushing $5-10K when all is said and done, I'm thinking most spec'd out M3's will run $64-68K.

Very good point. Though if you build a fully loaded 335i coupe you come out to a number in the low $50's. So it's probably pretty safe to assume that a fully loaded M3 will be $15-20K more.

$60k or less with memory seats and DSG is the upper limit of what I can swing. I need to convince the wife which is why I need the options above so that she'd be able to drive it as well
