Hit a *&*^ pothole last night....

Driving home last in Chicago, I hit a pot-hole with the front left wheel - didn't seem too invasive at the time, but got the TPM light go off - stopped, examined the tire, and it was losing pressure - anyway, could not do anything about it last night or today - had a 8.00am flight to Seattle this am...
So, my question, since these are runflats, surely it should sustain the pressure for a longer period? - I did look at the car this am, and it's totally flat...
Anyway, looking at this positively, time for the upgrade for wheels/tires...

Your TPM went off because you lost air pressure. You either blew a hole in the tire or lost the bead from either the impact or a bent rim. The run-flat in theory should allow you to drive home or to your dealer on the strength of the sidewall, where you would have been SOL with non-run flats. Put another way, four years ago I hit something on the freeway at night in my Audi A6. Blew two low profile Continental Pro Contacts. I had to call for a flatbed tow. A spare would not have helped me. If I was running run-flats I may have been able to make it home.

Sorry to hear that.

I hear this a lot: RFTs vs potholes. What kind of potholes are there the USA? Any pics maybe?

And as you already stated, tme for new wheels....

Sorry to hear what happened... Im glad to you taking this in a positive route though.

RFT's do sustain the structure of the tire for a certain amount of time, but it will also depend on the pressure that is being lost as well. If the leak is severe, then the tire will go flat at a faster rate.

Yea the tire/wheel protection is a must I hope everything goes good. I had all 4 of my tires replaced under the protection plan. Once the tread gets low I just pop the tire myself and take it in

Man - I can start an album of pics of potholes in Chicago I'll post some up when I get back there - I'm also not going to waste too much $$$ on aftermarket forged wheels - because it's inevitable to hit another pothole in the future...

Been searching on the Goodyear rfts - I have the LS2's - seems like they are problematic - I found a pdf of their warranty - I'm going to call them tomorrow - I got back to Chicago and went to the exact spot that I had the issue - it was hardly a real pot-hole - more like deep abrasion (about 3-4 inches), so it seems unreasonable for the tire to blow - anyway, I'll know tomorrow...

Just curious. What's your plan for winter, since you drive an XI and live in NY?

Quick update - Goodyear does have a all road harzard warranty for their runflats - pro-rated if more than 1/16 wear - not really a bad deal - the problem was locating a tire - finally got one at a Chicago dealer - taking car in later today for installation. I'm thinking at worst case I have about 10% wear which should have me out of pocket for $40.
I was hoping they would not locate a tire, so they would replace all 4, but oh well...
So those with Goodyear rfts, albeit problematic, you still have the warranty...

I think that warranty is only good for one year or more than 1/16" of wear,So if you get away with no issues after a year(yeah right) then the tire isn't warrantied anymore,I would keep the receipt of the new tire or tires you get installed because the warranty should start from that date, not the original date purchased.
