You have a TON(members opinions) of choices;

a) Listen to the BMW manual
b) Listen to forum members argue and try to convince you that their idea is best.

I changed mine at 1301 miles.

If you bought the car, I'd change the filter, otherwise let her rip !

My thinking is that if BMW suggests we 'break-in' our cars, wouldn't it make sense to change the oil & filter as a part of that process?

I plan to change the oil when my engine is fully broken in.

I changed my oil and filter at 7800 miles. everything looked fine, mainly a peace of mind thing. the synthetic doesnt break down like a petroleum oil and the filter does its thing. still i plan to change mine at 7500 interval from here on out.

That's an incredible idea! I'm at 1100 miles now, so I'm deciding on a breakin oil change. I was thinking, I wanted to get a look at the oil after 1250 miles, and see if it was full of little metal particles. But, to get a look at the oil, I figured I had to take out the drain plug. And once you do that, you might as well change the oil. But what I could do is just change the filter, which is easy, and check out the oil at that time. If it sparkles, I'll change the oil too. If it doesn't, then I'll wait 'til 7500 to change the oil.

Wow, did not realize that I should do the first oil change soon. Hmm, gonna have to check out these debates. Not sure of when I should do it.

Meditate on this I will..........

Why doesn't somebody send in the oil from there initial oil change and get a UOA (USED OIL ANALYSIS)? I will but it probably won't be until January at the soonest.

I would just follow what the manual says. Don't you think a company that has been building "the ultimate driving machine" for so long would know what they are talking about. If you do what the manual says, you'll be fine. If you get more peace of mind changing the oil more regularly, by all means, go for it; you'll still be fine.

My only reply to this is, until BMW starting paying for the "free scheduled maintenance" oil changes were not every 15k AND BMW had a rep for being high maintenance.

Just a thought.

Very true, I did not consider that. But maybe the technology is more advanced now and it truly isn't as "high-maintenance. When did BMW start giving free scheduled maintenance?
