engine idle on cold start up

hi all

just wondering when you start up your 1M's in the morning or even after a long stationary period the engine idles quite high before it settles.

mine idles close to 1500rpm initially which is quite loud especially for my neighbours in the morning.

i think this is normal and was wondering if your 1M's all have similar idling characteristics?

Well it's certainly quite loud at startup, although the loudness is proportionate to the length of time it has either been left idle or how cold it is.

Can't say I've noticed idle speed but will keep a look/ear out!

thanks as7920, that puts my mind at rest.

my car goes in for its run in service next week so will get them to check things over anyway.

itching to keep the loud pedal planted longer before upshifting

When my car was handed over to me, the very first thing he said to me in the hand-over bay, before letting me start it up, was the extra noise it would make for about 10-20 seconds whilst it was stone cold.

Mine has an ''unsteady'' idle on cold start it will rev +/- 1200rpm then slow down to 1100 goes back to 1150 after. I was just wondering if you guys have similar results?

The fast idling and strange noises from a cold start are perfectly normal. This is all in aid of warming the cats up to operating temp as soon as possible, all modern cars do it.

It is normal for all N54's to idle high when first started cold. The idle settles down quickly though. Seems like the colder it is.... the higher it revs on cold start. lol

I noticed exactly the same charcteristics when I heard my car started for the first time at dealers pre collection. I thought it was a bit odd and put it down to car being new and not started for a few days. Looks like this could well be a characteristic of this engine and the way it has been set up. I collect mine this Friday and was wondering if the engine is mechanically noisey or does it run smooth and quiet at tick over? How does this vary from cold to warm?

Mine has never done this but I always start mine and floor the throttle for 20-30 seconds to clean out the cats and let the rev limiter do it's job. Is this bad?
