Just did CDV on 335i

Ok, so it was and wasnt as easy as Id hoped.

First off, no need to jack the car if you have ramps. Very easy to just drive up and get under. I had enough room even being on a creeper.

7 8mm screws are easy to take off. What I didnt read however is that this plastic sheild is still held on by a metal retainer attached to the underbody. You have to swivel it about 45° and then it comes off.

After that is off you can clearly see where you have to work. Getting the retainer ring up on the old CDV wasnt that hard. However, the ring on the thing holding the CDV popped right off and landed by my head(something now you have to hold in your hand).

KEEP THE REPLACEMENT CDV READY!!!!

The minute I pulled off my old one the fluid started coming out. It was so pretty and smelled like french toast, I got hungry. However this shit is slippery and the new CDV kept slipping out of my latex gloves(highly recommended as this fluid can be skinterating). Finally got the new CDV in but the previously mentioned retainer ring for the other thing kept slipping off. I had to put on a fresh pair of gloves so I could get a good grip and snap it down.

Anyway, I was too lazy to try to bleed any possible air out(plus I didnt have anyone to help push on the clutch) so I put it all back together.

Took it for a quick drive and didnt notice much when shifting slowly. However, when youre romping on it the engagement is so CRISP that the first time I did it, I heard a loud THUNK in the rear and the DST light flashed at me like a crossing guard in a school zone. Tried it a couple more times and it just felt so smooth. Best I can describe it is the slow slip to losing traction when shifting fast no longer includes that word slow.

Anyway, Im happy and couldnt feel any difference in the clutch so I dont think I have to worry about bleeding it.

Happy motoring!

From what I understand, doesn't the clutch and brakes share the same fluid reservoir? I wouldn't want the air to get in my brake lines. But on the other hand, the air in the clutch line might just float back up to the reservoir and not affect anything. It's hard to tell without a tech manual. Anyhow, thanks for the input.
Good Luck!!!

2 things you should keep in mind:

- If you clamp the line before you remove the CDV, you will minimize fluid loss.

- After any brake fluid loss, you should check the level in the reservoir and add only fresh brake fluid should it be required.

This would have made life easier if ANYONE would have wrote that in their DIY...

Thanks for the tips on the install. I'll keep in mind to clamp the line when taking it out.
