"Necessary" upgrades...

From reading through most of the posts here and some other resources I narrowed it down to the CDV modification or delete and the wheel locks being the essential upgrades that the car should have. However there are a few other mods I am debating with and just wanted to get an idea of what the gurus around here think about "necessary" upgrades for the 1M other than esthetics (LED angel eyes, kidney grills, etc). Keep in mind not all of us track our cars which would obviously entail a whole batch of mods...

Do we need:

1) Oil catch can (OCC) - if so, which one?
2) Blow off valve - if so, which one?
3) Cold air intake (CAI)?

I am sure I am missing most of the stuff, so pitch in...

Sorry if this has been asked before...

Assuming the N54 in the 1M is arranged pretty much the same as in previous applications and some of the same products work..

1) HPF OCC.

2) TIAL BOV

3) Stett CAI if it fits on a 1M. Not sure. If not, then AFE's stage 2 looks great, or just a drop-in filter works.

I'm new to the world of mods, but am interested in learning (I'll be quick, I promise)...if folks post mods, do you mind writing out the full term? Otherwise, I have no idea what half of the acronyms mean.

Thanks, I hope it's not an inconvenience!

I'll be honest, I would say at this point a cold air intake usually hurts these cars more than it helps them. UNLESS, you are driving around a track at the top end of the gears and can use the 3-5hp increase it gives out. If you're just an enthusiast/spirited driver on the highway or even worse, city... the intake usually snags away some low end torque to give way for the top end gain. To me, one of the more attractive parts of these cars is the mass amount of low end torque so i would hate to dip into that for a few top end ponies.

just something to consider.

plus if its not a true cold air (in the wheel well or front grilles) you have to deal with the mass amounts of heat soak.

I've replaced the headlight switch with the EU unit, which provides the rear fog light button (no remapping needed). This keeps the Corolla and Camry drivers at a distance in bad weather.

I've also changed the rear view mirror for a HomeLink unit.

I guess that depends... does BMW have any reliability issues with the N54 bypass valves? I owned an Audi 1.8T and it was notorious for killing the diaphram (sp?) on the std BPV so I finally bought a piston-BPV from Forge and it was rock solid.

The VAG 1.8T uses a Diverter valve, not a Dump(Blow off) valve. Two very different things.

Blow off valves dump the air to the atmosphere (hence the whoosh noise), a diverter valve recirculates the air.

^^BOV isn't really necessary, but it's nice insurance to have one if anyone plans to tune their car and deal with higher boost levels. Something about the o-rings in the stock BOV isn't up to par IIRC. However I am running up to 13-14 psi at times with the stock BOV no problem.

Yeah the stett one is pretty much the only one that won't give you heat soat, which is why I mentioned it. Even the AFE dual cones I have make me lose a little bit of power down low, but I prefer the sound and the power increases a tiny bit when the boost gets very high, so it's a bit of a sacrifice.

Other mods to consider:

Short shift kit. Works wonders

Charge pipe (kinda goes with the BOV)

Clutch stop (if the clutch in the 1M is the same as in the 135i then you'll appreciate this)

Not required, but an FMIC will help lower intake air temperatures and will benefit on a track

that's about it.. the "importance" of everything else (chip/tune, suspension upgrades, etc) varies from person to person. I would stress that an oil catch can (OCC) is pretty important though. The HPF one is much better than the BSH one in my opinion, but some people run the BSH and like it. These engines get a butt-ton of carbon build up. You'll want to seafoam it once in a while.

Yeah sorry, it's been a while so I got my valve types mixed up but still, doesn't the N54 use the same type (ie DV)?

EDIT: Just saw 1speedbike's post. Makes sense, if you up the boost, look at upgrading the DV, otherwise... if the std one's aren't broken, don't fix'em

Tune will only get you 20-40HP max extra on top of stated 335HP. To go into 400's you would need intake/exhaust couple other mods.

This might be considered off topic but the most necessary upgrade is...

seat time

I agree with Dan (seat time), plus the three other things I am going to do is:
1. Replace the CDV (I just ordered one from Zeckhausen)
2. Headlight protection film (probably going to order the ones from Lamin-x)
3. Remove the Airbag warning labels from the sun visors.

speaking of seats.... weight reduction = faster car without the addition of power so consider that too.

Thanx for all the input guys...

Seat time goes without a saying... However as soon as I get the car the first few things on my list are the CDV mod, black kidney grills and window tint.

By the way, anyone know a good place to do the CDV mod in Boston, MA or nearby. I don't have a pressure bleeder and I don't feel comfortable doing it by myself anyway. I did ask the dealer to do it on my 330xi and they refused (not standard BMW policy, blah, blah)

I am also considering an HPF catch can, V1 hardwire and lux angel eyes in the near future, since those are all DIY...

Although I read some mixed reviews on the catch can, so I am going to wait a bit for the dust to settle before deciding.

Maybe down the road I will have the performance seats (although I heard you can't have them coded in the US), exhaust system, cold air intake and some carbon fiber installed.

Thank you all for all the advice and great ideas,

Miula

Correct. I always like to live with a car a while to see what I really need. I learned my lesson with my 1997 M3. I spent all this money; bumped my car into street prepared; went to Solo II divisionals and was the only car in my class not trailered there. I stilled had to drive the car every day unlike the folk who had dedicated cars never driven on the street. In addition all that money poured in that car did not make me a better driver.

Necessary Upgrades? None!

You should be asking what people like to change on their cars? Because actually nothing NEEDS to be changed at all.
