1M Extended Warranty Questions
Greetings all,
I'm expecting to take delivery of my 1M later this week. The core details of the deal are done, but now I'm trying to research the add-ons. I'm pretty sure that I'll be going for the wheel and tire protection package, and I'm considering an extended warranty as well. Rather than go in "cold" and expose myself to the usually F&I siren song and dance, I thought I'd toss a few questions out to the group here and "git mahself edjercated 'n sich" before the big day. -So has anyone actually sprung for an extended warranty up front? There has been surprisingly little traffic about that topic in this forum. -If so, what prices were you quoted, and what did you finally end up paying? -What is the latest after sale that you can add the "maximum" warranty package? Is that platinum? -Any other thoughts, experiences, and insights? Muchas gracias! |

I'm interested in this topic too. I'm hoping to take delivery in a couple of weeks and would like to know what the prevailing rates are for the extended warranty and extended maintenance service? I don't have to package it with the vehicle purchase.

Honestly, I was planning to wait till year 3 of my warranty and broach the subject w/ my dealer.
Since I could take the car to someone elsesoon after that point I figured I'd have more leverage.

It usually cost less in the first year of ownership. After that it goes up. I've heard you have to get the extended maintenance even sooner than that to get the lowest rates.

As far as I know the price will not change until your original warranty is up. Meaning you could buy the extended warranty in 4 years the day before the original expires and will not pay more because of it. I recently looked into the extended warranty/maintenance for my M coupe as the original warranty just ended and was simply presented with a sheet of the various options BMW offers with pricing. Pricing was only dependant on whether or not the car was still under factory warranty.
Of course, BMW may increase the price of the plans over time due to inflation/other reasons... |

So is it safe to say that there is NO definite benefit to adding the warranty at time of vehicle purchase? I.e. it can be added retroactively at any time while within original factory warranty, assuming no changes to current BMW policy?
Thanks! |

I was told by my dealership that the only benefit of purchasing the extended warranty at time of purchase was to save the regular price increases in the policy that happens each year.

That makes sense. You are losing "time value of money" by paying up front for a service rendered in the future but on the other hand you're hedged against inflation.

Wouldn't you be able to/make it easier to negotiate the price of the extended warranty when buying the car new rather than waiting for 2-3 years to do so?

Why would you buy an extended warranty while you have factory warranty? You're just overlapping warranties which is a waste of money.

The extended warranty does not overlap. It begins after 4 years or 50k miles.
