I currently have the BMW Alcantara/Aluminum shift knob on my car without the boot. Looking at the underside of the stock boot it appears they bonded them together with epoxy and some type of 3 clip system. I'm going to attempt to separate them and make the new knob fit the 1M boot. If anyone has already done this please let us know the trick, if there is one.
TIA

I've had the shift knob since day 1. I had to peel the leather from the old shift knob because it was bonded. I just folded the excess leather over under the shift knob. It looks good and works well.
I believe I got the knob here: http://leatherz.com/Merchant5/mercha...82_Shift_knobs |

Somewhat related, but seeing pics of the new F10 M5 6-spd manual (only for the US), it looks like it has the same shift knob as the 1///M, except illuminated. Hoping that is indeed the case and we can retrofit those.

I used a flat head screwdriver to pop the 2 small clips loose. With the remaining large clip, you'll have no choice but to break it. I simply bent the shift knob backwards and that broke the clip off clean and flat. If you were to revert to stock, the remainder two clips clip back in, and with the third clip, it'll still sit snug where it broke off; you wouldn't know the clip is broken once everything is back in place. (I tired just so I'd know for if I ever need to revert everything back to stock) Hope that helps! And for anyone wondering, once I had it all apart, the third clip is just too big, there is no way you'd be able to separate without breaking it. |
