What is recommended Oil Change Interval for 1M

Anyone know? I was told the 135i manual is it, but they give you an ///M add-on. Is it 15K miles like the other non-M cars?

Are you asking for what BMW calls for or what most people are changing their oil at? OCI.

I would think BMW says the same as a 135i. ie: once every year or 15 to 18K miles, based off of the car's bc.

I changed my oil every 6K miles. But that is me. I also did two oil changes at 1,200 miles and 2,400 miles - when my car was brand new. Now I go with 6K mile OCI's.

I just want to know what BMW recommended interval is as that is what they pay for in the US. They also offer extended service plan so if it's only every 15K that is one more reason not to get it.

Personally I change at 7500 miles and I might do it every 5000 on 1M, but I just want to know what BMW says.

I also think they might make it the same as 135i but I have heard that they do a break-in oil change at 1200 miles which is not on the NON-M cars. So I can see it being different both ways.

All BMW's and Mini's for that matter use a sensor to determine when to change the oil. The range is 15 to 18K miles depending on how the car is driven. However the dealer will short change the oil once a year for the first 4 years free of charge in the US.

M cars also include the first free oil change at 1200 miles.

I plan on changing mine between 6 to 7K on my 1M. Technically the new Long Life Synthetic oils should be fine for the BMW recommended intervals, however most people just can't rap their heads around using oil for that long. Oil change shops have done a great marketing job selling 3 months or 3,000 mile oil changes.

Modern engine oils are very good and don't need to be changed as often. Modern engines have much tighter tolerances and less blow by to contaminate the oil. Under normal driving conditions you really don't need to exceed the manufactures recommendations. They wouldn't sell a 100K mile warranty if the maintenance recommendations were insufficient. There are a couple of exceptions. If you don't allow your engine warm up and run long enough for the moisture to evaporate off, then change your oil more often. If you drive the engine under high loads for extended periods, then change it more often. If you overheat the engine or turbos, then change the oil immediately. In the days of old, I used to change my oil every 3000 miles. Now I follow the mfg recommendations without problems.

^^That all makes perfect sense and all, but... have you ever seen your engine oil when you change it? The stuff is really thin and BLACK!! I know everyone says the lab analysis say its ok, but I am sorry... not in my engine! I'll sticks with my short OCI's.

You also have to remember that BMW used to have much more frequent recommended oil change intervals BEFORE they started including them for free with a new car. I will stick to the old school. My father, who was a mechanic, then service manager, said that preventive maintenance, and good oil changes were the cheapest insurance you can do. I agree.

Also - did anyone else notice that the engine oil capacity is not listed in the 1M's owner's manual!

Have you gotten your 1M yet? Just a question because when you do, I think you might have a hard time driving it calmly, it makes you do it . I think it will be the case for most and therefore change the oil more regularly to keep your mind at ease, MHO.
