Structural rigidity maintained even with split folding rear seats.

A while back someone had questioned whether the optional split folding rear seats might make the car structure less rigid than the previous 3 series which had cross-bar braces even with rear seat pass-thru. Armen52 had brought up this question in this thread:

But having now read the product information booklet (lots of cool little bits of information in there btw) just posted here, I saw this:

"Split folding rear seats and ski bag

Like that of the 5 Series, the body shell is
now the same whether or not the vehicle is
equipped with this option at the factory; the
seat backrest itself consists of a “hybrid” wall,
a rigid welded steel frame and plastic shell,
that is fastened to the body at four points.This
shell itself forms the bulkhead and is made in
two versions, one with a fixed backrest and
the other with this folding arrangement.The
plastic shell reduces noise transmission from
trunk to interior."

Gotta put faith in the BM engineers

Yes, but we all know the problems that are plauging the M Coupes and Roadsters. At least they are covering the subframe cracking in those cars under warranty, if the car is still under warranty.

Nice! There was a pretty big difference between an E46 with fold down seats and without.

well, my personal theory has been to always get the most rigid car I can get. So for me its been Sedans, No folding seats, No sunroof. My cars have always been very tight, no subframe problems, and i'm generally really happy with the car. sure there are times I curse because I wish i had a sunroof, or the folding rear seats so I could fit more stuff in the car, but overall I klove the stiffness of my car the best when Im driving fast and turning fast

Wow you're the man for finding that info. That is just so cool! Its exactly what I would expect from BMW engineering but I'm still impressed.

To me a car must have this feature. If I have to pay for delivery for a few boards from Ikea I'm not gonna be happy.

Same here, have to have the fold downs for me, i cart around a lot of shit, especially really expensive Intel Server and Storage gear. The space is what i'll miss the most on my X5.
