Gutter damage

Any one had their rims damaged by a gutter and hand them repaired?

My front passanger side wheel rubbed the gutter the other week and the sales rep at BMW said most wheel/tyre places can fix the damage. I think they lightly machine and buff the rim...........?

Any comments or experiences with getting this fixed?

I had a mate who had similar issues after letting his gf borrow the car for a day, it depends on how deep the scratches are on the rim to how much it will cost. If the scratches are only superficial they can literally sand back that small section of the rim and respray it and you won't be able to notice it unless you look up close to find it, where you can see the rim has been slightly smoothed over. That sort of repair will set you back around $60 a rim.
If the damage is deeper i believe they can fix it but it'll cost closer to $200 and you generally need to take it to a specialist wheel repairer. Your dealer will be able to reccomend one for you as they generally get rims repaird on 2nd hand cars before re-selling them.

i had a scrap on the very edge of my rim 1 inch long. BMW themselves at DOncaster VIC quoted me $80 to fix. Or else, any tyre repair place call fix, I rang 2 places and they will fix for $150 and they come to you. What's involved, they remove the wheel, debadge it, then repray the entire wheel apparently. Ive yet to get mine fixed, am collecting a 'few more' first!

I have personally used two rim repairers and both were excellent. I am a fussy guy and I could not see the repair. One is a “come to you” business and the other is a shop. Both charge about $150-$230 depending on damage.

I can give you their details if you like.

Cheers.

curb rash has nothing to do with how large (or small) your rims are... it has mosre to do with your parking skills.......

No, because we are running super low tyres. Mine at the back running 285/25/20. The side is so thin that could hit any curb more easily.

gutters don't jump out and eat your wheels you have to drive too close to them to get a curb rash... hence my comment before

That's the way I see it. But those with higher profile rubber are more likely to survive a temporary brain fade.

Hei Have you guys read the DIY area.

I bought some spray paints, sand papers and aluminium putty, repaired the wheels my self. Total cost around $60 including extra can of paint with wrong colour.

I repair 4 wheels, style 158 which I got from ebay. Although not perfect the result is near perfect. I have a lot of paints, sand papers and putty left and dont mind doing the lesson free with my left over material if anyone in Brisbane is interested.

Note: I dont know how to fix chrome colour/non bmw standard silver alloy colour.

Here are the before and after pics. To be honest, if you look very closely: within 20cm from the surface you will see the very slight imperfection. But that was because it was my first work, the last wheel I did was so much better than this. I had no prior experience with painting or handling any metal work.

Assuming you are doing One wheel only :
- Wash, Clean and dry the wheel - takes 10 minutes.
- Clean the damage area with cloth and turp/white spirit - takes 10 minutes depending on how bad.- 10-15 minutes. I got my 9yo boy to help me.
- Stick masking tape - again depending how much damage if I did the whole wheel it took me 30 minutes.
- The hard part is put the putty on. I got a "massage" type aluminium putty Bunnings. That means you dont need to mix it with anything you just need to massage it with you finger. You only need very tiny bit and apply tiny bit at a time and need to do it quickly otherwise the putty get hard very quickly. This part took me 15 minutes.
- Then wait for 2 hrs for the putty to dry...
- scrape with sand papers- took 30 minutes to 1 hour..
- prepare paint area with newspapers, I did it in my garage : no wind.
- paint primer - 3 minutes/layer wait 3hrs then paint again upto 3 layers
- paint the silver colour - Got the paint from Supercheapauto- the silver colour from Bunnings didnt match. 3 mins/layer then wait 12 hrs upto 4 layers
-paint gloss - 3 minutes/layer then wait 12 per layer.

The waiting time depends on the instruction on the bottle, But I always exceed the recommended waiting time. I spent one hour after work to do this , total were 2 weeks and I did all 4 wheels. Not as quick as described the DIY section. With the material I bought for $60 I think they are enough for at least 20 wheels.
