Filled up full tank and noticed 300 mls on my dashboard

What's going on? I have a 16 gallon tank in my 328 and I filled it with VPower (93). Usually I see 440 mls but today I see 300 mls.

It is based off your average MPG if I'm not mistaken. Mine says 130 right now and I'm at half tank, Which is primarily based on my led food driving habits, getting 17.2 mpg

most likely you were driving the car semi hard or in traffic so it's taking that into account

You didn't have to reset everything. When calculating how much gas you have left in your tank, the computer takes in to account your recent driving habits. If you were just driving the card hard around town, your miles would be low. Get on the highway for 10-15 minutes and it would go up.

Sounds serious, i'd take it into the dealer pronto. You could even try BMW assist and get it towed.

That does seem really low. I was always under the assumption that it was based on yoru MPG in the display and if you reset it, it would fix itself in a few miles if you were getting higher than your previous average. After another recent thread here , I checked, and found tha the distance to empty is calculated on the last 18 miles you have driven. (thanks Tom K and my owners manual for setting me straighter)

Yes, often forgotten that it's a 'rolling calculation' and explains why you can return home with a good amount of miles remaining, start next morning and within a few miles has lost 50 miles or so, later to return to what you would expect.

Many have been caught out, expecting it to relate to the current mpg display, or be a much higher figure than may be showing.

As DarkRider, Wrickem & Pete said, you were probably in city traffic before the fill-up. So if for the previous 18 miles you were averaging 19 mpg (normal city mpg for a 328i), the new miles to empty figure would calulate to around 300 miles. It should adjust up after some highway cruising.

And for all you guys on the east coast north of me, good luck with Irene!

Tom
