Not that impressive for a straight six NA motor. I once found a 335i that had 165k and was running just fine and according to its carfax hadn't been in service that many times. That is considerably more impressive when you consider that is a much more powerful output running on the same six cylinder engine and so much more could go wrong with a turbo'd engine.

It is not usually the mileage itself that is the measure of how well an engine endures. It is typically the type of miles. High mileage in a short time, usually are running hot and making long trips, often at virtually constant speeds, so wear well.
More damage is often done to the low mileage example, which hardly ever gets hot and is used on short trips and/or stop-start driving situations. I had one car which at 18 months with over 40k miles, engine was just like new. I've seen other examples at 40k miles at say six to eight years, that were very poor runners, virtually worn out. The high mileage car did two 60 mile journeys a day, 5-days a week, for 18 months, virtually all on open motorway. HighlandPete |
