the 7 speed manual
we knew this day was coming....we were all just waiting to see how long it would take.
the 7 speed DCT transmission has been a huge hit in many cars, however the manual transmission enthusiasts have always been wondering what will happen to their beloved transmission. Is it being phased out? Or is there a new transmission in development? Well here's the answer found in the new 2012 Porsche 911. The first look at a new 7 speed manual transmission gear shifter! http://www.motorauthority.com/news/1...surprises-here i wonder if or when we will see it in at BMW VIDEO UPDATE! !

having a 7th gear in a stick would probably be enough to guarantee me not going to the 8 speed auto. Right now, it is hard to justify having 6 gears versus 8 if buying a new car!

Depends on how gearing is worked out here; if it' a 7 speed to keep the gears short then I would kill myself, if it's done so that 7th gear is served as nothing than an OD gear, then it's cool - it'll save gas at least.

That's all the PDK trans does. Seventh is a super overdriven gear which is how the Porsche equipped with hem get upper 20's mpgs. it's pretty cool!

They claim the 7th gear is strictly for fuel economy, i heard the rest of the gears are the same if not similar to the older 911s

Personally I don't understand why they didn't just make 6th a lot longer. You seldom if ever go above 4th on a track, and even if you're on the autobahn and need as much acceleration as possible even in 5th, how hard do you need your car to pull in 6th? This just seems like overkill and increased potential for missed shifts or even money shifts, especially considering that there are now FIVE shifter columns since they didn't put Reverse under 7.

I'm not sure I'd want a seven-speed. I'd either not use one of the gears....or I'd finally cave in and get something like a DCT.

I've done 4>6 but never 2>6! I hope you double-clutch that to keep wear down on your 6th gear synchro. It's not designed to deal with a large RPM difference.

6MT is just fine. Though if it is indeed only 7th gear that is very OD, then I could live with that.
Regarding someone mentioning why not just OD 6th gear even more, my reply to that would be because a lot of performance cars are very capable of making passes in 6th. I'd imagine no one would want that taken away, I'd especially imagine no one would want to keep downshifting to 5th everytime. Having a solid FD rate in the rear coupled to a good 6th gear ratio, with adequate power and torque and making moves without having to downshift is one of my favorite feelings in my cars personally.

Start rolling in 1st, go to 3-4k in 2nd and switch to 6th, it falls right aroun 1-1.5k and there's plenty of torque to pick up the speed.

oh how i miss my 6spd manual on my 08 accord coupe... sidetracked here.
yes, 6 would seem plenty to me but if 7th can serve as gas saver then it makes some sense. |

I guess 7 gears makes sense for a more pure performance car like an M3 but in real world driving it seems excessive to me. I don't know, it kind of remnds me of the amp in Spinal Tap.
