OT - Visiting Melbourne
Hi guys, I'm driving down to Melbourne this weekend and basically started wondering... is there actually anything to do there????
Ok, so more seriously, does anyone have any suggestions about which route is best for the Sydney-Melbourne and return drive? The way down will be time priority and I've been told that Hume Hwy is best but sections of roadworks can cripple speeds at times. Return journey might be more scenic and via Princes Hwy instead..? Can anyone who has done this trip or been on these roads share some thoughts please? |

Good lord what to do in melbourne??? Man are you serious!! Melbourne just won the most livable city again!! There is tooooo much to do in Melbourne to post here, if I didn't come from syd and have family here I'd still be in Melb and loving every minute.
At least give us a reference point as to what you like. As for routes you mention on the way down it's the Hume all the way but in the way back go via the lakes district and the coast road to tumor and go back to the coast and up the old hwy, fun all the way!! |

You planning do the whole stretch in one go?..Can be a bit exhausting but a good nights sleep is all that's required to recover.

NSW doesn't offer much - you could go via Cooma then Thredbo, Khancoban and back to the Hume, assuming snow doesn't prevent this.
Better to turn off at Euroa, via Alexandra, Marysville and the Black Spur. Or if you have a whole day, go out to Eildon, Jamieson down to Matlock and back to Marysville. Amazing roads, but tiring! Aside from that, the Hume makes it an easy day's drive, if rather tedious. Lindsay Fox Motor Museum is really worth a visit IMO.

Spend some time in St Kilda.
Hit up Mt Dandy for a nice driving road. Also visit Dandenong for the best ethnic food in VIC. Albert Park driving range is pretty fun. Chapel St, if you're with some friends. Don't bother going into a cafe alone...it's forbidden in Melbourne. Experience a hook turn. Etihad Stadium. Chadstone shopping centre ???? |

The Great Ocean Road from Torquay to Port Campbell (& 12 Apostles) is a must do for visitors and it's especially good in a great handling car. This would at least be an overnight drive though, there's plenty of places to stay at Port Campbell and there is penguins there too but i didn't see any and you are a lot further from the action than Phillip Island.
Mt Dandenong is also a great drive as mentioned. If your into sport the go to the MCG, take a tour and visiting the national sporting museum. There's Crown and Southbank for food & gaming or a nice walk along the Yarra. Take a tour out to the Yarra Valley for a wine tasting session, there's organised tours so you don't have to drive! I would recommend not going to Dandenong for food as previously mentioned by someone else. It's a hike from the CBD and has developed a reputation recently for violence etc..

I think benaud refers to Dandenong the city, not Mount Dandenong. For first timers it can get a bit confusing. Mount Dandenong is great during the day, winding roads, scenery, at the top you have a look out point for a view of the city & its not too far. Roughly about 40-45 minutes from the city.

Just another suggestion....
Do the Black Spur drive which is the road between Healesville and Marysville (place where the bush fires occurred back in 2009). It is an awesome road to drive on but it can be heavily monitored by Police (especially on weekends) so stick the 80km/h limit to be safe. The bloody police wear camouflage and hide in the bushes, I am not kidding about this... Once you get to the town of Marysville, go past the main roundabout of the town (It's easy to spot) and then at the second roundabout take a right turn up to Lake Mountain. Lake mountain is a two way road with 100km/h limit and is pretty twisty so you would be really pushing pretty hard to keep it over 100km/h on most areas. This means you can pretty much really hammer through those roads without worrying too much about going over the speed limit unlike the black spur where you can easily top 80km/h on many areas I have never seen any police on the lake mountain road and i think the police tend to ignore this road because as a i said, the majority of people would struggle to speed through those roads anyway. The road leads up to the top of a mountain where there is an Alpine resort and a massive open land which can be used to take some nice photos |

ide tell you some clubs etc to go to but probably too exclusive for you.
Springvale, Victoria st and little bourke would do u well. St Kilda is great if you enjoy being surrounded by the dregs of society. Pretty much stay away from Toorak and surrounding suburbs, you wont like it there. |
