Backing out of an Ordered BMW
I recently placed an order for a BMW 328i convertible. I placed the order several weeks ago and put a $1000 deposit on the car. It is now "Awaiting Transport" from Germany to the US. My first mistake was not trying the 335i before buying thinking I needed to save some cash but after driving the 335i last Friday, forget saving a few bucks... My other issue is I ordered what I thought was a silver with a hint of blue color, Atlantic Blue Metallic. But I just saw a thread on here yesterday thinking it was the color I ordered, because it was the color I wanted, but then noticed the picture was of the Arctic Metallic color. Nice web site and color swatches BMW??? So, I'm now terrified of the Atlantic Blue Metallic wondering what the heck will show up?
So, my dilemma: 1.) Wait for the car to show up in late May and see if I like the color combination plus see if I am still okay with the 328i's engine. 2.) Forget this whole order and have the dealership keep my deposit and reorder a completely new vehicle in Arctic with the 335i's engine. If I go with number 1 and the vehicle shows up, but I don't like the color can I just tell the dealership sorry but I'm not taking this car and please order me another one? I'm pretty sure I can do this, much to the dealership's frustration (I hate doing this as I have bought 2 BMWs from them before and they are the most local to me.) But hey this is $50k and I should be happy with what I'm buying. Thoughts? Comments? |

Sounds like your heart is already set on the 335i

If you've bought 2 vehicles from them before and care about how they will view this sudden change of heart (should you actually have one) then you could sit down with he salesman and tell him your plight and maybe they will cut you some slack. It is a lot of money and i've seen people cancelling their orders after the car arrived at the dealer - I never found out what the dealer thought of that...but it sounds like you're a loyal customer, if you're worried about what they think, just be honest with them...they will probably help you out.
If you're having second thoughts about the car, not to mention the color (which is important) then you ought to quickly explore your options and make an effort to make sure you get what you want. I think there is quite a difference between the 328 and the 335, engine, options, standard equip...is it worth the higher price tag? Thats for the individual to decide. I would wait and save to get what I really want, i'd hate to buy something this expensive and be disappointed...ugh, thats no fun. |

Given what you have said I think you'll have a sever case of buyer's remorse if you do take delivery of the 328. 1) the 328 engine is strong, but it's no 335 (then again there are the looming issues with 335s) and 2) Atlantic blue is no hint of blue it is blue. Arctic IS what you wanted, a silverish car that put off a light blue cast (sometimes light green though).
You ordered a popular color and a high demand car. Your dealer can sell the 328 tomorrow to someone else, so he is not going to lose out. It's not like you ordered some oddball combo or model that will be tough to get rid of. Plus you are ordering a more expensive car, and have been a customer of the dealership for awhile. There is no reason for your dealer to be anything but understanding. Don't feel like you are the first person to change their mind at this late date. It happens all the time. Like you said, it is a lot of $ either way, you should get what you want. Just make sure before you order the 335 you aren't going to freak a week before delivery that it's so expesive. |

Talk to the dealer about ordering a 335 and he can sell the 328 to someone else. A 328 convert will fly of the shelves.

Definately get the car you want--whether it is the engine or the color that you are unsure about--you are driving this thing for at least 3 years, so make sure it is exactly what you want. For the record, the color being wrong would just drive me BANANAs....

My first BMW was an 01 530i. I loved the car but within weeks wished I had bought the 540 with the V8. If you are having seconds thoughts now, and you are anything like I am, it will only get worse. Get what you want. The delership should be understanding. If not get your deposit back and go to another.

I'll just echo what everyone else said... the dealer won't have any problem selling the car... hell, it may be sold to someone else before it even arrives. I'd just suggest sitting down with the salesman and re-ordering a different car. keep in mind that the wait for a 335 convertible will be substantially longer than the 328.

your spending a lot of money, whether it is a 328 or a 335, make sure you get the car you really want in the color you really want. Your dealer will sell the Atlantic blue 328 in a second. just be prepared to wait 3 months for your E93 335

#2, order what you want and you'll be happy. Like above poster said, they will have no problem selling the convertible and might actually thank you for canceling.

You want to spend another $5k, no dealer is going to say "no" to that.

I'm reordering
First of all thanks to everyone for confirming what I already knew.
I called my sales guy today and am waiting for him to call me back. I'm cancelling the order and placing a new one for a 335i convertible in Arctic Metallic. What I want. No remorse. Only sad part is I'll have to start from square one on the wait list and probably will not get the car until August time frame, I'm guessing... |

+1 - definitely go with what you want - the 335i. If the dealer gives you a hard time (doubtful that they would), I'm sure someone else would be more than happy to help you out...

So, Erhard BMW of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan is giving me a hard time about this. They are trying to get me to buy another 328i and one that they have on their lot that is nothing that I am looking for. So, the sales guy is calling other dealerships to see if he can find me something as opposed to ordering me another car. Problem is this is all just a big delay of the inevitable since I doubt he'll find a 335i in Arctic Metallic with cream beige interior and aluminum trim, sport package, AT, and cold weather. So, I hope to get this all resolved this week.
My question to the group: I didn't sign anything saying I had to take delivery. The only thing we filled out was Vehicle Lease Order form but it states at the bottom that this order is not a binding contract. Unfortunately, it says see reverse side for terms and conditions of this agreement but he only made me a copy of the front. Does anyone know if there is anything I'm held to with a Vehicle Lease Order form??? |

And I seriously doubt they would even consider doing that since you are a repeat customer. Make them find, or order, exactly what you want.
