2007 335i w/ 100k miles reliable?
I think i am starting to lean towards buying a 2007 335i instead of a 2006 330i. Since my budget is only $20,000, the 335i will most likely have over 100k miles.
Is a 335i with this many miles reliable? I have read that 335's still under warranty have various issues. I am aware of the HPFP will be a likely problem, but are there other things that could cost me a lot in repairs with a high mileage 335i? Am I buying a problem and am i better off with a lower mileage 330i? The power of both cars will be sufficient for me. I am only looking at 6-speed manual cars with sport package. I did read somewhere that someone thought the 335 is better suited with the auto transmission due to turbo lag and that the 330i is sharper with the manual transmission. Is the 330i 90%+ of a 335i? Or is the 335i a lot better car? Thanks again |

Why buy a car where a) the original warranty has expired b) an extended warranty has expired
imho when it's your car and it crosses 100k, you know the history and would have fixed absolutely anything that needed addressing. But why in the world would you take on someone else's 100k+ car? You can easily drop $2000-$8000 on a seemingly innocent repair. 20k is enough for a brand-new car, like a loaded Elantra. Seriously, anybody can afford a used 7 Series, but not many can afford to repair it. A 3 is no 7 but it is no joke unless you can DIY everything. |

Budget and 335 should not be used in the same sentence. I agree with Bleep, Turbos alone will sink you. For 20k get a 330 with less miles.

Also, for most BMW problems start off by scanning your car with the Peake Research Tool. It contains the actual BMW codes. If you want to register a newly installed battery for free (just buy a $10 cable) and google/download BMWLogger

I would not but any car with over 100k miles, you just don't know its history. Some cars make it to 150k with few problems some have problems every other day from mile one. I would go with the 330, especially if you think the power is sufficient.

A civic! It should be reliable with well over 200K and if something like the engine does give, just Ebay one for $900.

A 335 with 100K miles shouldn't be even close to $20,000. I just bought mine for $24,000 with 38k miles

Sure something may give, but the difference will be that it will cost pennies to fix when compared to anything German. Like I mentioned, you can buy a whole another engine with 30K miles for $900 on ebay.

that depends what u mean by major.... I had Maxima with 125k only replaced evap valve(free under 1 month warranty..cost $300), and Maxima with 165k only replaced starter(also free under 1 month warranty and is also only $300) and shocks, and few o2 sensors. buddy had Integra with 170k, replaces clutch timing belt w/water pump as part of maintenance. the guy here looking for winter beater had Maxima that just died on him at 250k miles....

Am I missing something..since when did this become about cost..the OP asked about relaibility and was debating a 330 or 335..not some crap box..anyone with a brain in their head knows a civic will be cheaper to service than a BMW..

You asked whether any car will be reliable at 100K miles and I can assure you that as long as it has been properly maintained, a Civic with 100K miles will be just as reliable as new (I know this from personal experience). There are examples with 250-300K Miles running just fine...

If you don't plan on doing some of the work yourself then I would pass on the higher mileage car. If you have some ability with a wrench and enjoy working on cars, you have a receipt trail from the previous owner etc. Then I'd say go for it.
The 335i really isn't that hard of a car to work on--- Everyone on these boards seems to think that just because its a new (ish) BMW that you can't do any of the work on them with a standard set of tools. Truth be told its basically just like my e36 with a more cramped engine bay and more expensive parts (just because its newer). |
