License plate screws?

Anyone have to get the screws for their license plate?? Didn't realize until I went to put the plate on that I don't have any on there. They are the same screws on my 335 that were on the 330 I just sold. Kind of an odd thing to need but I am hoping an auto parts store will have similar small screws.

Just go to a BMW dealership. The sales guys have them sitting in their desk draw. My dad asked for a few and the guy gave him more than a few.

M5 x .8 - 10mm long. Most hardware stores carry them. Just make sure they're stainless so they don't rust.

They're an odd size. Couldn't find any anywhere. Hardware stores didn't carry the right length. Ended up using a set that are too long... sucks.

IhaveaBMW-closest BMW dealership is 45 minutes away so that option took a backseat real quick.
I was able to find some random small screws at work last night and they work barely. If I put a small strip of tape in the screw hole they should hold tight.

Do you mean for the actual license plate or the plastic frame the license plate is mounted onto?

IIRC, Autozone or Advance Auto Parts carries them.

For the plate to go into the frame, the frame is already in place.

Funny you say that since I got charged $25, they called it deliquent titling, for not registering it before the temporary tag from KY expired. I was just waiting to sell my 330xi before I switched the plate over to the 335xi, and for that I pay a penalty.

This may sound like a dumb question, but in general, do those square plastic pieces that the screws thread themselves into come out? I've never actually held one in my hand and it can't be rocket science. But after enough removals and installs of plates, screws strip them....

+1, first thing I do to a new car is replace the screws with stainless. Dealer ones are cheap coated screws, so the $1.50 for stainless ones is worth it.

Semi-related: any suggestions for a plain black rear license plate frame? Power-coated or anodized, without logos or advertising.

Thx!

no, you either have to pop them out from behind or do what i did, which was to pull them out piece by piece with a pair of needlenose pliers, then the new ones simply pop into the square holes.

You realize that question was over a year old?

I sure hope John didn't wait thirteen months for this answer but instead figured it out in the interim...
