Yay...I'm number one...

Anyway...how do you get rid of all the dang chips in the front bumper? I've heard of those magical paint sticks, but not sure how they smooth it out. Do they, or do they just fill in the hole? Can you smooth it out in anyway and if you do, then what? Wish I woulda invested in a clear bra...dang thing is chipped like crazy. Anyway...thanks for the help.

Also...what happens if somehow you scrape your friggin rims on a curb...not that I would ever do that...can you smooth it out/file it down or do you just leave it there?

Seriously, never heard of those paint sticks. I have a couple of very superficial ones on my front too. Do you have any pics of that clear-bra you were referring to? I've never seen a clear one. I don't like the black ones...just makes the car look cheap in my opinion.

Unless you're talking about stuff that's like saran wrap...I think I've seen that before. I just wax the crap out of mine. As long as it's not so deep it causes rust it's just cosmetic. Show her scars with pride!

Yeah, the 3M protective covering...not really saran wrap, but you get the point. You can get it through BMW as an accessory or get the more deluxe version through some other folks...not sure where I saw that website.

fire-n-ice, the merlot Z4 in the picture has the 3M clear bra. If you look closely, you can see the edge of it.

Which is why its cool, cuz you have to look hard to see it, unlike the BS black ones...so anyone care to discuss my detailing questions?

Bavarian Autosport has a paint pen that can be used for small stuff. As for larger blemishes, I have personally used touch up paint from the dealer on my Jetta. If you really want to do a good job with the touch up paint, be careful not to put too much on, otherwise you will just spend time sanding it down and smoothing it out...then re-treating the surface once the paint has settled.

As for the curb rash on alloy wheels, there are some shops that will repair the rims depending on how bad the damage is. I have seen some DIY's on the VW forum that I also belong to for some minor wheel repair. I guess it all depends on how much you personally would want to do or want to pay for, for someone else to do it.

DIY is better...got any links...if someone did that to their rims I'm sure it wouldn't be too major, I think the only one who would know its there is the owner...

As far as the chips go, most of the things I got goin on aren't just indents, the edges are raised so It not just something you can fill...want it to be smooth again

thanks Leif, yea I can see it now just barely. Is that something you put on yourself or have to have done? It looks shrink-wrapped almost. I might consider something like that. It appears tastefully done.

Dear Dammmittt: It's not ALL ABOUT YOU YOU KNOW!!!!

I will see if I can find the DIYs for you, I think they have since been archived...

There is no reason why you cant do it yourself, though the few people I know that have it installed, whether it be a BMW, Lotus, MINI, whatever...all have had it done at the dealer or some other shop. I do not think it is recommended to install the clear bra if there are already chips and dings on your car. But if you get the chips / dings fixed then I would go for it!

You can do it yourself with some "soap-spray" or have it done for a minor cost. There are tutorials out there...dammit, where did I see that website...oh well...i'm posting way too much today...i'm outta here

And yes...it IS all about me...who else would it be about?

I had the 3M thing done during just after they PDI'd my car. I would recommend it to people. The only thing, though, is DON'T get it done by BMW. They just send it to another place to have it done, then they charge you more. I'd search online (eg. places that do window tinting) to find an authorized dealer.

So...any words of advise on the paint sticks/wheel grinding?

Also, some friggin dump truck pulled out in front of me today and dropped a crap load of dirt and rocks in front of me and put a decent chip in my windshield...any good DIYs on minor windshield repair?

Oh dammmittt I hate it when that happens. While on a very short drive today, I noticed that there are so many more tractor-trailers then there used to be. When I see one, especially a dump/concrete-type, I downshift and get the flock outta there! Poor Dammmittt...here's a hug..(((Dammmittt)))...hope Rick my boyfriend don't mind

Yeah... best advise is to leave your car @ home. No rocks = no chips.

J/K. I had gotten a nasty bullseye chip on my windshield 2 months into ownership and I don't think you can fix those yourself. Ended up getting the chip sealed at an autoglass shop.

How badly kerbed are your wheels? I found this DIY on the web. Guy did a nice job.

paint sticks suck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! '

the only thing to do is get a 3M applied the very first day you get the car (make sure to wash off that dealership wax). Im an idiot and havent gotten my car bra'd up so Im going to have to get the whole front end resprayed at some point, and when I sell it I will get accused of being in an accident im sure ;(

I thought they might. The clear bra seems to be the thing to do...i'll look into it if this whole dealer trade-in thing pans out...
