Waaayyy Off Topic

But I don't care, someone explain to me why everyone feels the need to use BMW code names for cars instead of the actual production names...It seems unnecessarily erudite (GRE word, HAHA) and confusing

Since I am fairly new to the BMW market, I will take a WAG and say it refers to the body style.

(WAG - official military term - Wild Ass Guess)

Cheers!

Well I think its because most of BMW cars reuse names, for example 3-series could mean any car from a 1980s 3 series to todays car. Also the actual model is useless cause there were 318is back in the 80s as well as right now. So the best way to identify these cars is by their chasis code. In 20 yaers from now there may still be a Z4 driving around, so it would be nice to know which version we drive

yeah, a 745 could be a turboed 7 from the 80's or a NA 7 from a couple of years ago

very different cars with the same name

Anwyay, I guess I'm just angry that I have to learn what an E90 or E86 or whatever is...

Heres a confusing one for you, in the past they would use the Exx body #s but they wouldnt change it for a 2 door version, convert version etc.. So the old Z3 since it was based on the mid 90s 3-series was coded the E36 still. The M coupe version was the 8th variation on the E36 chasis so it was called the E36/8

Talk about confusing! I think bmw has made the system better now by giving each car its own unique Exx code

E85 = Z4 Roadster
E86 = Z4 Coupé

Sounds kinda nerdy if you tell someone you own an '07 IR(#403) E86 S54, don'cha think? I prefer to just say "I own an ///M." Period.

Retired from the Navy. Noticed that you had a Pentagon Car Sales frame around your rear plate . I had purchased my MINI S through them while I was living in Sicily. Small world.
